Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calendar

I want to start by saying that I really "love" the built in calendar function for dates.

However, it needs some improvement in that when selecting a date the focus on the date is wide, so that it is very easy to select the wrong date. Try it out and you'll see what I mean. Other calendar functions in other programs show the selected date as depressed, so it becomes an easier mouse click/select.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I'm getting some complaints from my users, that's why I started looking into this and then noticed the problem.

Can this be fixed or corrected?

    Charlie,

I am not sure what you mean. I use these date fields extensively - The user can select dates easily by either using the arrow keys and pressing enter, or by clicking with the mouse. I must not be understanding the problem ...

      RE: Calendar

I know it might seem trivial, because we've done without the calendar function for years, and now to have it is great, and it may be a bit picky too.

The only problem I am having is in the selection of dates with clicking via the mouse. Try highlighting a date and you'll see that the selection includes not only the date but some black area to the left. If you are not really careful in selecting the date, you can easily find that you select an adjacent date instead of the one you want. At least that's what I found happening to my users. They swore that they were clicking on the right date. When I looked into it I found out the real problem - being too fast with the selection and input operation.

Anyway, I was just wondering if this was just me and whether it could be fixed to be more precise in the future. What would be great would be showing the selected date as depressed.

Sorry - everything else is working so great with Alpha that now we're beginning to really split hairs!

I like the dates the way they are too. My problem is that when installed on any 98 machine I get an error message when the user selects the dates from the calendar but not if they type in the dates. No problem with this on Win 2000 or XP.

I think I see what you mean. If the user clicks slightly to the right of the date, they get the next date on the line. The selection box is not centered. However, when a user gets sloppy and makes a mistake, they always seem to blame the program. I think the calendar isn't perfect, but with a little care, it shouldn't be a problem. If this is giving the user trouble, what other things are they getting wrong? I had one user who swore the program was making a mistake. When I sat with them as them entered data, I saw what they were doing, which was completely different that the process they claimed. Eventually, I had to trap as many "stupid" moves as possible. Now they don't have a problem.

One of my machines uses W98 and I don't get this so it is probably something about setup rather than the OS itself.
