Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    HTML Code

    Does anyone know how to incorporate HTML commands within Alpha? I've stumbled upon urlencode() and urldecode(), but can't find any examples in the books on how to use these functions.

    What triggers my request is the recent post by Louis Nickerson regarding phone lookups. Currently, if you execute this code (using sys_open() command), you lose your current open window to the internet. What would be better would be to open this lookup in a new window. BUT, to do that, you need to be able to send html codes.

    Any ideas?

    RE: HTML Code

    urlencode and urldecode were written specifically for the upcoming Web Application Server, but we decided to also make them available within Alpha Five. You can view the preliminary documentation for these two functions at http://was.alphasoftware.com/function_reference.html#urldecode

      RE: HTML Code

      I'll actually be working on the server that the above URL goes to so you may temproarily have trounle access it. So below you will find the doc for those two functions:

      URLDECODE
      Syntax: cDecodedText = URLDECODE(cText)
      Description: Decodes text that has been urlencoded. Many characters are not allowed within URLs so their representation must be encoded in order to use them. This function automatically handles the decoding.
      Examples:
      URLDECODE("This+is+a+test") -> This is a testURLDECODE("Hello+World%21+How+are+you%3F") -> Hello World! How are you?
      URLENCODE
      Syntax: cEncodedText = URLENCODE(cText)
      Description: Encodes text so that it can be safely used as part of a URL. Many characters are not allowed within URLs so their representation must be encoded in order to use them. This function automatically handles the encoding.
      Examples:
      URLENCODE("This is a test") -> This+is+a+testURLENCODE("Hello World! How are you?") -> Hello+World%21+How+are+you%3F

        RE: HTML Code

        Thanks Lenny for the prompt response.

        Is there a way to force a new window to open a url reference? For example:

        XBasic Code

        url_addr = "http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com"
        sys_open(url_addr)

        >> This will go to and open the http reference.

        What is needed is to pass html code like:

        Text Text Text

        ...which will open a resource window. This would be valuable for the Louis Nickerson Phone lookup...and there may be others that could be developed.

        How could one do this?

          RE: HTML Code

          AFAIK, there is no way to do this from a URL.

          I think there may be a setting in IE called something like "reuse windows" which may behave as you desire if you turn it off. But if the user has a different browser as their default, this won't really help you.

          Your other option would be to not use sys_open. If you specify which browser to use, it should always open in a new window as you are telling it to open a new browser:

          ie = "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
          sys_shell(ie + " http://www.alphasoftware.com")

          or

          ns = "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe"
          sys_shell(ns + " http://www.alphasoftware.com")

          The problem with this method is that you need to find the correct path to the users browser, which will be in different locations on different systems.
