Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime info-where is it?

How do I find information on Alpha's Runtime? I've just spent 45 minutes looking for it under Products, Services, Announcements...

I need to know which version to order, and how much it costs.

    Thank you,
    Wanda

      RE: Runtime info-where is it?

      Hi Tom,
Thanks for the tip - but I still don't see much info at all on runtime versions....not enough to make a decision.

I am developing stand-alone applications, for now and simply want to be able to put the app on a disk for installation in another computer.

For now, I don't need to network. However, there are 5-7 offices that will be independently using an app I am currently designing.

Should they simply have Alpha5 installed? Then, all I'd need to do is have the app appear when they open the program?

      Thanks, again!
      Wanda

        RE: Runtime info-where is it?

Go back to shop and then to A5V5 products. There you'll see a 3 user and 5 user pack. These are 3 or 5 full programs.

Then you'll see the 10 user, 20 user and unlimited runtimes. These allow you to install the application on as many computers as you want as long as the network doesn't have more than 10 or 20 simultaneous users. The unlimited allows you to install on as many networks as you want. Each network may have an unlimited number of users.

          Hi Ohlen,

I'll go back to the shop, then. Are you saying, though, that if I don't need to network any application, then I just need each user to have a full version of A5v5?

I assume that buying the "runtime" versions up to 3 or 5 is not really a runtime version - it's just a discount on multiple copies of A5V5?

          I just feel I'm missing something...perhaps sleep!

          Thank you,
          Wanda

Right, the 3 pack and 5 pack are 3 or 5 complete programs. I think it's one disk (or download) with 3 or 5 license numbers.

              Wanda

I copied this paragraph from the a5v5 runtime shopping page. Hopefully this will help you with knowing where the runtime version should be used.

                Wanda,

Basically, just think of the runtime as Alpha Five, but without access to the master Control Panel.

I believe the detailed information you are looking for can
                be obtained as follows:

"If you would like to receive full documentation of our Runtime Application prior to purchase, please contact [email protected]"

I hope that suits your needs,
                Melvin

Thank you all for edumacating me :)

I was off work for the last couple days and could not respond until now. I appreciate the insight, and am now better equipped to make the decision about which Runtime License to purchase.

                  Great day to you all!

Just one final bit of input Wanda.

If you buy the smallest number runtime pack you are likely to need and install that on the machine you have your full version on you will the be given access to the installmaker which is one of the greatest "unsung" parts of version 5 for developers.
It allows you to create a single .exe file that will install both the runtime files and your app (in different folders if you wish) and also create the necessary shortcuts, splash screens and icons. It really is a nifty bit of work and has saved me having to create install disks with multiple options on to say nothing of saving you the cost of buying a professional looking installation programme.
