Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bug with build 25

Since installing build 25, now we are getting the following:

"Alpha 5 has caused an error in user.exe
    Alpha 5 will now close.

This happened at least 15 times today.

    Was going on?

    Ronald,

I'm a mind reader. I know exactly the cause of your problem...

If you care to share what you did that lead to the failure, someone might have an answer.

Golly, if I really could ready your mind, I'd charge for solving everyone's problems.

      RE: Bug with build 25

      Sorry Ken,

When entering a new record, I think specifically entering data into a memo field, after typing a couple of sentences, a window pops up with:

"Alpha 5 has caused an error in user.exe
      Alpha 5 will now close."

      And Alpha 5 does close.

This happened at least 15 times today.

We have new Dell desktops running ME on a windows 2000 network.

            Ron,

What Martin means is to right click on the table and choose Open Default Form. Also, you might try Database compact.

Post your database along with detailed instructions on how to reproduce the crash and we will take a look at it.

Though I know what you're talking about because of the timing of this post, it would be helpful if you used the full build number. Build 25 probably happened sometime in the mid 1990s. The current build number is 1385-1026.

Sorry I didn't get back earlier. I hadn't had time to troubleshoot the problem.

Anyways, I had the secretary do a database compact and it looks like that might have solved the problem for now.

                We're running version 1382-1025.

I was unable to duplicate this problem at home.

                Thank you,

                  RE: Bug with build 25

                  Aaron,

We think we know what's going on now.

We have 3 new Dell computers, two with Windows ME and one with Window XP. This problem only happens on the Windows ME machines.

When the user is entering data in the memo field and presses the backspace key, not all the time, but some of the times this warning happens closing down Alpha 5.

I did as much testing as I could on my Windows 98SE computer and I was unable to duplicate this problem.

It appears to be a Windows ME issue.

I can send the files if you are still interested. I would have got back to you sonner. I've been hospitalized with bypass surgery. It slowed me down a little.

Yes, if you could please send the files my way, I will check the problem out. Please provide a detailed description of how to reproduce the bug.

Also, if you haven't already, please download build 1397-1029.

It's probably not a windows ME issue as I use me on my development machine and do not experience this issue.
