Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CPU Usage Constantly at 100%

I was very excited to install the new version of Alpha 5 as I'd been a loyal user during the 1990s (pre Softquad). However, I quikcly ran into a serious problem that caused my machine to pretty much grind to a halt. When I checked the CPU usage through Task Manager I discovered I was flatlining at 100%. If I closed Alpha this went back down to 2% or 3%. On reloading Alpha I'd be fine for five or ten minutes and then I'd start flatlining again at 100%. I tried using the -nodbcheck parameter mentioned in the FAQs, but this seemed to have little effect I still ended up at a constant 100% with an unustable machine that clunked along at snail's pace. I'm running XP Pro. If anyone knows a fix please do let me know. Thanks.

My computer is doing the same!!!
    AMD Athlon 1200 MHz
    256MB Ram
    64MB Video card Rage Fury

But it works fine even if I load more programs.

I guess the SETI project won't get any of my extra CPU idle time if I have Alpha open. lol!!

Use the search feature of the message board and look for nodbcheck. You'll find a wealth of information that talks about this condition.

I tried the nodbcheck parameter, but it had little or no effect. After five minutes or so it gradually worked back up and remained at 100% CPU usage until I shut A5 when immediately went down to single digits. I did a search on nodbcheck on this messageboard and was stunned as to the scale of this memory problem. Alpha must get going on a fix ASAP. Apart from this and the pdf driver problem I think it is a killer package and I dread having to return to Access (yuk!) but at the moment A5 is unusable on my system.

          Ned,
The -nodbcheck parameter has worked for others on the message board to reduce the consummed cycles. If it doesn't work for you, I'd check to see if something else is running up the processor usage. In my computer(s), without the -nodbcheck parameter, processor usage goes to 100% immediately; there is no delay. The fact that the usage builds over time on your machine(s) seems to indicate a script that is misbehaving; stuck in a loop (or something). Sorry I can't be more specific.

Are you sure you applied the nodbcheck properly and it will only work if you open the database using the desktop icon.

Is this the "PeekMessage()" method that was carried over from V4?

This was supposed to be fixed!!!

              what build are you using?

if you see the release notes, you will see that in a recent build we turned the default to "do not keep on refreshing" and we added a "refresh" button to the toolbar.

the 100% CPU issue is now a non-issue.

Selwyn, the one thing I will say is that there are times that I have the same problem. Once I close Alpha and restart it then its ok. It does seem sometimes that if it has been running for a while that it starts hogging cpu usage. At least this has been my experience with it.

To be honest I've given up on Alpha for the moment, which is a real shame. Efficient memory management is important. I tend to have several apps open at all times and never have problems, but whenever Alpha is running it all grinds to a halt. I do hope that Alpha manages to conquer this problem conclusively and then I'll be back to it like a shot. Fingers crossed :)

As Selwyn said. memory management is now a non issue. Try they newest built. You won't have this problem anymore.

RE: CPU Usage Constantly at 100%

This is eeerily similar to the problems that I am having. While I am not getting 100% usage, it is using enough of the cpu that we have to actually shut down a5 to be able to fax sometimes, it also seems to be about a 5 to 10 minute delay. We really enjoy this program but if we cant find a solution to this we may have to look elsewhere.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Selwyn might think there isn't a problem, but I can assure you that I'm using the very latest version of XP and the latest build of Alpha and there IS a problem. I'm using a high-spec machine with over half a gig of RAM and yet I find myself having to close Alpha down if I wish to work on other apps. Why would I be making it up?

I don't doubt that you have a problem, but I'm not sure that Alpha is causing it. Perhaps it is, but I just did an experiment and had 5 apps running at the same timer. Netscape 7, NS mail, wordperfect 10, A5, and Winfax, and CPU usage was about 4-5% if I wasn't actually entering data or doing something.
I am running Athlon 1.6, 512 meg ram.

Perhap you might have some other clues? Have you checked your video driver?

On my machine, CPU is at 1% when Alpha is idling along w. 3-4 other programs. When I open a form or do something like a lookup, cpu usage jumps up to 40-50-70% or more for just a couple of seconds, then drops down again. I assume that you are not operating across a network w/o shadowing?
