Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Path

Is there a way of telling alpha5 to use a file in the current folder without refencing that file using it's full path.

    Instead of:
    "d:\folder\folder2\folder3\file.bmp"

    "current folder\file.bmp"

The full path is "OK" as long as the folder name or drive isn't changed.

In alpha 4, you could use and all scripts would be run from the current directory.

    TIA

    RE: Path

    Ron,

    :A5.get_path()
gets the path of the currently open database (.adb file). You can build on this to build the path to known subfolders.

    A_DB_CURRENT_PATH
is a system variable ("special variable" in the docs)which holds the path to the current table.

You can check out the other :A5.get_?() techniques and special variables in the xbasic doc.

      Re: Path

I made a folder for A5V7 and built my new database. I then made a dos folder for my A4V8 DBF's and moved them i nto this folder. I then opened A5V7 and opened my New Database and added the DBF's from A4V8 to the new Database and Tables. I then started building Forms. When I decided to get rid of the A4V8 Folder i fould that all the tables were accessing the DBF's at A4V8 Folder. I wanted to move my DBF's to my A%V7 folder but be ableto keep all the forms I made already and have them access the DBF's in My A5V7 Folder. How do I change the path of A5V7 to see these DBF's when I move them?

        Re: Path

Please tell me that you did not delete everything that was in the "A4v8" folder! When you build forms, scripts, etc., they are placed in "data dictionary" files (look the term up in the Help files for more details) and these files are attached to, and named the same as the tables they belong with. In other words, every .dbf file will also have 3 data dictionary (.dd*) files plus an index (.cdx) file and, if appropriate, a memo (.fpt) file. Rather than having a separate file for every report, form, etc., as in A4, A5 puts all layouts and scripts for any given table in the related data dictionary files. Similarly, all indexes are in the .cdx file rather than separate files for each index.

Attaching the tables in the A4v8 folder (or any other folder) does not move them to the current database folder. You have to do that manually.

You should find all the tables and sets in your A4v8 folder that are used in your application and copy them to the same folder that the new .adb file is in. Copy all files with the following extensions:
        - .dbf, .cdx, .fpt (and older .dbt files if one exists without a matching .fpt file)
        - .ddd, .ddm, .ddx (.dd*) [the data dictionaries for tables]
        - .set, .sem, .set (.se*) [the data dictionaries for sets]

Once these are copied to the same folder the .adb file is in (and I hope that isn't the same place as your Alpha5.exe), open the A5 control panel, go to the Tables/Sets tab, change the view mode to "details" so you can see the full path and drop (I wouldn't delete quite yet) the tables and sets that are in the A4v8 folder then add the 'new' files that are now in the A5 folder.

Once everything is working in the A5 folder, you can delete the old stuff in the A4 folder.

          Re: Path

You were 100 percent correct. I moved everything to the new folder called A5data and added all the files you mentioned in your message. Now every is up and running as it should be.

          Thank you
