Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Database won't open, New install on two pc's

The database sits on a network server and it opens fine on the first pc, we have a 3 user license. When I installed the software on two other computers, the database is greyed out and won't do anything. The installs are the same as the first computer as far as I can tell. What am I missing?

    Any thoughts?

    Need answers, provide details.

    Network type?
Have you checked that the two other computers have sufficient privileges to access (read/write) the folder containing the database?
Can the two other computers save files to and retrieve from the network folder containing the database?
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,

The network is a server 2003 active directory. All users have full control of the folder containing the database. I can save and retrieve files from the folder.

        Not Needed,

The database needs to be in a shared folder on the server machine.

        The recommended setup is easy:

Install Alpha Five (runtime or development version) on each workstation. Open Alpha Five locally on the workstation, then use File / Open Database to browse over to the server machine and open the database there. If you can't open the database on the server it's likely that your workstation user doesn't have read write privileges to that folder on the server.

I suppose it's also possible the database files have been locked. Did you copy them to the server from a CD platter without releasing the read only locks that your CD software created?

The folder is shared for the users that need access and they have full control.
Not sure about the database being locked. I'm working on this from behind. I didn't set it up originally. If the database is locked, can I unlock it from the pc that will open it?

If the database can be opened and the records edited from any workstation or from the server itself, the files are not set read only. I misinterpreted your initial post. Sorry.

Back to your original post where you mentioned "greyed out". I am thinking that your database actually opens but won't operate? You see the control panel but the tables are "greyed out" (not available) like one of the two in my attached screenshot?

You are correct, the program opens but the table looks like the second icon in your picture.

That's a pathing issue of some sort. When Alpha starts it tries to locate all the "pieces" stored in the database definition. Greyed out tables are those it can't find.

Can you take screenshots of the control panel, tables/sets tab from the working machine and one of the non-working machines and attach them here?

Also, the control panel in Alpha Five supports an optional "details" view that is helpful in this kind of situation. Right click white space in the tables/sets tab, choose View, then choose Details. You can see the path to each table and set that Alpha Five is trying to use.

You guy's called it. On the pc that was working, I right clicked and selected details in the white space and the icon was pointing to:
c:\a5_old\apps\doc.dbf. I copied the folder to the same location on one of the pc's that wasn't working and opened the database on the server and it worked. I'm having them test it by inputing some test data on one computer and then opening up the database on one of the other pc's to see if everything is the same.

                        Thanks for everything!!!

That doesn't sound right. All three pc's icons should point to the server location. If the working pc was pointing to it's c:\ drive, it was only operating locally. If you copy the directory to another machine, it will operate locally but independently.

Are you sure the files that are in the working pc's c:\a5_old\apps\ directory are also available in the server directory?

                            Messageboard protocol

Need Answers / Not Needed is not the normal protocol for the Alpha messageboard.

Since we are a friendly and professional board, most if not all members use their real names.

                            Please consider following that protocol.

                              path problems

When you open Alpha5, the original database path is to the server and is an .alx file. I have attached some screenshots that I hope will explain it.
