Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Maybe OT - Out of Memory

    Morning

    Build 1600

Not sure if my concern is an XP issue or A5. Tested a few other workstations with recent but older A5 builds with same result.

I have a form with many image ref fields. After image placement and associated text and stuff, it counts the photos. Then a preview button calls up the appropriate report that has the same image ref fields in conditional opbects.

Each time I preview a record, about 50 to 100 mb of memory is consumed - the cumulative file size of all the photos on the report showing and being hidden by the cond objects. That would be OK, except the memory doesn't get released on closing the preview. So each record ( or the same record) just keeps compounding the memory usage and fairly soon I'm out of memory.
If I use the preview report button from the report window and use the record navigtion buttons, it's ok, just the initial report consuming 100 mb ram. But if I close the report window and open the report again, it consumes more memory.

Granted, this is a fairly heavy duty form and report I'm using but I would have thought it would release ram upon closing the preview.
I used the same report layout (without conditional objects) last fall and don't recall the out of memory error (they were smaller report sizes, but after repeated use something should have shown up).

Any idea what I can do except close A5 every 10 reports?
(mem returns to normal upon closing A5)

(Apologies if I missed this topic anywhere but I found no reference to it)

    Thanks
    Duane

RE: Maybe OT - Out of Memory

    Evening

Well I did some testing with smaller report sizes (less photos) and it does the same - accumulation of reports and an increase in the page file usage.

Did some testing in V5 as well - same.

So this explains some issues we were having in the past without noticing what it really was.

So, now I have to ask if there is a way to flush the memory on the fly without having to close and restart A5.

Or am I missing something obvious here?

    Thanks
    Duane

Did you ever solved this 'memory hog' problem???
I've the same kind of problem while saving a report as PDF.

      Kind regards,

Re: Maybe OT - Out of Memory

Workaround the memory problem, used a third party activex (www.cete.com) component to create a PDF on the fly without memory leaks.

Re: Maybe OT - Out of Memory

If you want to (or have to) use third party tools then why not use a memory manager such as Cacheman ( http://www.download.com/3000-2094-10018600.html ) which used to be free but is now $10. There are other ones still free out there as well that work. I had used earlier versions of cacheman when I had Win98 as my OS which resulted in ZERO BSODs occurring for over a year while actually multitasking with it!

            Thanks Mike...but ..

It has nothing got to do with not enough OS memory, Alpha can't address not all of the available OS memory. While generating a report-layout multiple times it's not releasing the used memory when it's finished(memoryleak).

I can put 2 or even more gig of memory in to the MS 2003 server, Alpha still crashed when it reached approx the 300 MB.
