Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter on form Load

    I have this problem over and over and can't seem to find the "right" way to fix it so here goes.

    I want to enter a form showing just the active employees. To that end, I have created a checkbox variable called "IsActive" in the Onchange event of this variable I put the following code:

    DIM records_found as N

    records_found=0
    if var-"showall=.T.
    topparent.show_all()
    else
    records_found = topparent.queryrun"Isactive= .t.","Elastfirst","","No","Employees",.f.)
    end if
    browse1.refresh()

    This works and successfully toggles back and forth between Active and Inactive employees.

    My problem is on the load of the form. I want only the Active employees to show, so I placed this code in the OnInit of the form:

    records_found = topparent.queryrun("Isactive = .t.","Elastfirst","","No","Employees",.f.)
    browse1.refresh()

    But it doesn't work - i.e. I get all the records not just the Active ones.

    What am I doing wrong or can anyone help me.

    RE: Filter on form Load

    you could try putting the filter in the form properties.

    alternatively, put the filter in the form.view() method that you call to open the form.

      I've tried that, but then I cannot get the filter to release and let me see all the records. I've been using the command topparent:show_all(), but my records are still filtered.

        RE: Filter on form Load

        Here's something from my old A5v5 Help file (based solely on A5 documentation) that may help you. It's now a free download near the bottom of my A5 Programs page. It doesn't include all the new v6 functions but what is in there is often easier to find because of the customized keyword list. (As I've said before, I don't blame Ed for not building his list this way. I didn't have a means to automate the process so it was very time consuming.)

        These methods aren't as easy as Form.view_queried() but they really aren't that difficult either. I use the second two methods on a regular basis and find they work very well. The last one is most applicable for your case.

        This script loads the customer form, puts it into Query by Form mode, enters a search restriction in the State field, runs the query and then shows the form.

        Form.load("Customer")
        customer.query_by_form()
        customer:state.value = "MA"
        customer:query_run()
        customer.show()

        This script does the same query as the above script, but instead, sets the form's base filter. This filter cannot be turned off by pressing the Show All button. (The script assumes that the Customer form is based on the Customer table.)

        Form.load( "Customer" )
        customer:tables:customer.filter_expression = "state = 'MA'"
        customer:tables:customer.query()
        :customer.show()

        This script is similar to the above script in that it runs a query for the Customer form. Unlike the above script, the query does not set the form's base filter. Therefore, pressing the Show All button after the query has run will show all records in the form.

        Form.load("customer")
        query.filter = "state = 'MA'"
        :customer:tables:customer.query_create()
        :customer.fetch_first()
        :customer.resynch()
        :customer.show()
        :customer.activate()

          RE: Filter on form Load

          Cal, once again and after many years you continue to help, aid and assist us on this site!

          I tried everything in order to solve this problem - all to no avail!

          I used your last solution on my pushbutton to load the form with only once minor modification - that of putting a query.order="Lastname" in order to sort my records.

          I never would have thought of putting the code in that position because I am still unsure of how A5 loads things and in what order. I placed the code for the filter in the OnInit event thinking that that would load first. Obviously that was wrong at least in this application.

          Once again many thanks for your very invaluable help!
