Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report email function

    Hey gang...

I'm new to Alpha 5....and am having a problem getting the report email function to work...I'm following the steps...and for whatever reason, the temporary file that pops up in the email attachment window isn't being created...I keep getting an error message that the temporary file cannot be found.

    Help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Phil

Can you post the actual message or a snapshot of it?

That'll provide more information for us to process.

If that is not successful, you may need to post your database with instructions to recreate the problem and then we can really help.

To take a snapshot, press the PrtScrn button on your keyboard and then paste into Paint. You can then attach that image to a message.

Here is the print screen your mentioned...showing the error message that I'm getting.

It appears that the temporary file that should be, being created is not...and is not available to attach to the email

        RE: Report email function

        Phil,

I just successfully sent a report using the Alpha send/email as an rtf attachement without any errors. I even received it ***winks***.

What is the version/build you are using? What are the 'exact' steps you are taking? I think you might need to strip down your db and attach it here (or feel free to zip and email to me) so that we can follow your 'exact' steps in an attempt to duplicate the issue.

        Good luck

          RE: Report email function

          Hey Cheryl...

Did you save out the file first...or try sending it directly from the Report Preview menu?

I'm trying to send it directly from the Preview menu, as outlined in the reference information.

I'm following those steps...selecting "File" from the preview menu...selecting Send, and then selecting the desired file type...this brings up the email form...with a file name listed in the attachments area...when I finish addressing the message, and select Send...I get the error message about not being able to locate the file that is listed in the attachments field.

If based on this...you don't any thoughts about what might be going wrong...I'll upload the database.

          Thanks...
          Phil

            RE: Report email function

            Hi Phil,

I did not try to save the file first. I sent it directly from the preview screen. File, send file, select rtf format, typed in my email address and clicked on send.

I used the Alpha built in email client, not my default.

            Good luck

              Phil,

On another note .... are there any spaces in the report name that you are trying to attach? If so, maybe that is the cause.

              Good luck

                RE: Report email function

                Cheryl...

My original Report name did contain spaces...so I held out hope that renaming it would fix the problem....alas...no such luck...and I'm following the same steps you outlined.

I'm also using the Alpha default mail client...as I really have no idea how using Outlook or whatever would work..as before I changed this...no email screen was being brought up at all. Once I changed to the Alpha mail client...at least I started getting an email form...

Whatever is going on...the symptom of the problem is that the temporary file is simply not being completed and saved to disk...so there is no attachment being created to send....and I have no idea why not...and don't understand how the database itself could create this problem.

                any other suggestions?

                Thanks,

                Phil

                  Phil,

Attach a zip file of your db, or email it to me directly with the report, etc that you are trying to send so that we can attempt to duplicate the issue for you and find a resolution.

                    Cheryl...

I just loaded the E-Mail features database, and attempted to email a report from it to myself...and encountered the exact same error that I'm getting with my own database...file not found...did I miss something in the configuration process, or installation??

                    Thanks,

                    Phil

                      Phil,

Have you tried to attach the report in a format other than the rtf? Try the html, pdf, etc and see what happens. Maybe the problem is with the rtf?

                      Good luck
