Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Screen Flashing Only v6

    I have a form that does not have a tool bar. When I load the form the screen flashes showing the form with tool bar then the form displays without the tool bar.

    Loading the form from the control panel or from a button on another form makes no difference.

    If I add a tool bar to the form then it does not flash.

    I checked in v5 forum and found that this was fixed in build 1501-1053 and infact I do not have this problem in my v5 apps.

    Am I missing something in v6?

    Regards

    Screen Flashing in V7

    I have the exact same problem in A5v7.

    When the system toolbar was removed entirely, it causee an error, so I left one separator line on the toolbar. Now, when the app starts, my splash screen shows fine, but right after the first form appears, the screen flashes and some part of the control panel shows, and then the form is redrawn and everything works from there on.

    The flash is too fast to tell what exactly is showing, but it is a full screen flash, even though my app is not full screen.

    Any ideas are appreciated.

      Not seeing your scripts or any further details, I would say try using UI_Freeze() to prevent the flash.

        I put the following code for the OnActivate event for the Main Menu form which is loaded with an autoexec script:

        ui_freeze(.T.)
        ui_msg_box("Stop","Whoa, Nellie!")
        ui_freeze(.f.)

        That stopped the form and displayed the message, and when I clicked the okay button, the form disappears, and then it appears that the tables/sets layout appears reduced and then in full page format, each for perhaps a few hundreds of a second. Then the Main Menu form is redrawn. Really hard to see, other than the annoying flash!

        Dunno if it might help, but the form actually is just a greeting that gives a couple of choices of things to do via on-form button. It has a table with a couple of dummy records that have one field, Id. The table is never used other than for a couple of forms to hook to.

        I don't think the autoexec has anything to do with the problem, but here is the code for that:

        Dim pForm as P
        pForm = form.view("Main Menu")

        dim key as c
        key = "Preferences\ImageFields"
        delete p
        dim p as p
        dim p.UseStandardWindowsDialog as c
        p.UseStandardWindowsDialog = "Yes"
        :registry.save_settings(key,p)

        It all works fine if there is some function in the system toolbar, so I doubt that the problem is with the autoexec.

          Now things are really weird. In frustration, I remove the freeze script since it didn't do anything, and I also reverted the system toolbar to the default, hoping that would correct the problem.

          No such luck.

            A solution!

            After diddling with showing and not showing menus and the control panel, and then putting everything back exactly like it was to begin with, the darn thing now works!

            Only 9 hours wasted on this one...

              Richard, how about giving us the details, so fellow travelers won't have to recreate your solution from scratch? -- tom

                Sure, Tom, although everything I did is pretty well outlined above.

                After I reset the system toolbar back to the default values, I found that the flash still occurred. I noticed, though, that the Control Panel was showing behind my Main Menu, where it had not been before. I had turned it off in the Database Properties, but apparently when I reset the system toolbar, that flag came back on.

                So, I went into the Database Properties and turned the flag off, since I do not want my users being able to access the Control Panel in any way. For my own access, I use a small invisible button area in one corner of the Main Menu, which turns the CP on for me. (Pls excuse me for using the bad word ac__ss!) :o

                I'm not sure how much this will help others since I am using my own custom menu buttons on each form used. But, hopefully, it may give a clue in some situations.

                  I also do not use the tool bar, just using menus across the top of my application and even if I hide the control panel by clicking on that option in the Database Options and check the hide window toolbar, prior to my opening my main page, the default toolbar (two rows) comes into view and then disappears when my main window form opens. I haven't found a way yet to not have this happen. I am actually using v7 build 4023

                    Screen flashing

                    Alan,

                    Seems like this goes way back to at least v4 (where I started) and the toolbar or menu items seemed to be involved. My opening screen, which
                    is just an introduction to the appl jumps, flashes, etc so I did what someone above said about adding a blank toolbar. That stopped about 90 % of it in the runtime but not in the developer stage. We have Act 2000 Premier here at work and it has the worst startup of any program I have ever seen. Alpha Five opening apps work like a champ compared to it. Maybe someone has a good answer as to how to resolve this.

                        Even slower

                        Jerry:
                        I tried your suggestion before and the flashing is even more pronounced when opening the database, using your suggested settings. The flashing is minor when in the control panel and then opening the main form.
