Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    run_total running total

I need a browse with a running total. I used a calculated field but the total in the last row produces wrong result. I know run_total is for report where it works just fine. Any idea how to put a running_total in a form or in a browse?
    Table is like following:

InvNumber InvAmount *balance (this is my calculated field)
    ----- ------------ ----------
    1 25.00 25.00
    2 10.00 35.00
3 5.00 35.00-"wrong, it just repeats the last balance)

    formula I used is run_total(InvAmount)

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    RE: run_total running total

Interesting, I just tried the same thing with a browse of 30 rows. Worked correctly until the last record (30) which just had a repeated value from the row above it (29). I then sorted the browse on another column and everything re-calced correctly until the last record which was again the value repeated from the line above it. Will post back if I find the solution.

run_total() is meant for use in a report.

when used in an embedded browse it will not give reliable results.

        RE: run_total running total

As I said in my post, it is well documented that run_total is meant for report. Definitely there has to be other ways to do it as this is a very common function of any invoicing program (quickbooks register for example). If anybody knows please share your code/trick with us.

One other thing that annoys me is that how many $300+ program do you know that lets you do something (with wizard) that you are not suppose to do?

Alpha five people added so many features in their program, I think now they should concentrate to make it stable and intuitive.

            Abul:

The simpliest way to accomplish this to create a calculated field that totals the invoice amounts from the browse table. I do this all the time.

Assuming you have a set of two tables the format would be:

tot_amt = total(Detail-"InvAmount,grp-"Main) where Main is the primary table in the set and Detail is the child table.

It works every time for me and gives me the current total for each record in the Main table.

Way to go Dan Renkel. Works like a charm. Now only if I can figure out why it works!

              Thanks a lot.

                RE: run_total running total

tot_amt = total(Detail-"InvAmount,grp-"Main) will not give you running total, only *Total*

                  RE: run_total running total

I beleive it will give the current Balance if the Inv Amount used are plus and minus. The field would not be displayed in the browse table but used on the form as a current balance.

                    RE: run_total running total

so IT IS using run_total(InvAmount) until it reaches end of file then it uses (just once) total(InvAmount). Neat trick !

Speed would be an issue for large database as it is accessing file for eof.

                      RE: run_total running total

I thought it was a "neat trick" too but certainly has some limitations. If it dosen't find eof, you're cooked! For others following this thread that didn't check out the previous expression it is simply:

                      if(eof("tablename"),total(num_field),run_total(num_field))

This gives you a running total in brouse column that evaluates automatically.

Would still love to hear some other suggestions though for getting the same result as this would be extremely handy at times.

In any case I'm glad it worked for the original poster.
