Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't clear xdialog buffer

I have an xdialog record list list box that pops up in the CanWriteField event of a table during new record entry. The popup is populated by a filter expression. The purpose of this popup is to give the user the option to update a record on the underlying table. When I exit the box, using either the OK or Cancel button I find that random values from the filtered selection of the xdialog are appearing as I cursor through the new record. There must be a buffer for that info. Does anyone know how to get to it and modify or delete it's contents? For that MAtter does onyone know how to grab the selected record to transfer it to the underlying blank new record?

    Greg,

It would be helpful if you posted a sample of what your seeing and trying to do with step by step instructions so we can answer your question accurately.

      Here is the sample

There are 3 tables in this app. The one of concern is the customer table. This is a typical customer table with the usual stuff, the fields to look at are the "phone" and the "counter" fields. The xdialog code affects these fields.

Everything happens in the CanWriteField event of the phone field. I have done everything using action script.

1)Open the entry form. You will see a blank record, enter some random data press "Save and Enter"
(That is how a regular record should go in.)

2)You should have a new blank record, now enter "4201828" in the phone field. ( This is when the Xdialog pops up the record List List box, This pops up if there are existing records with the same phone number)

Select one of the records (Take note that the Counter field holds a value also note the fname of the person selected and the names of the others on the list) Now press "OK" ( The rest of the code will at this point increment the "counter field by 1)

Now you are back to the entry screen, I had expected to come back to a blank record but instead you will see that the phone number remains along with the fname of some random person on the xdialog box. And if you cursor through the fields other information will appear.
These are the values that I would like to control. In this instance I would like to come back to a blank record. I have tried a clear fields action to no effect.

      3) Now cursor back to the "Phone" field and enter another random record, press save and enter and we are back to a blank record.

      4) Enter once again 4201828 in the phone field. Once again you will get a popup (note that the "counter" field has gone up by 1 for the fname you chose in (2). This time press the "Cancel" button ( The code in the CanWriteField event will branch out of the action script back to the form). I had hoped to be able to come back to a record that retains the 4201828 but with no values in fname, but the rest of the info lname,address1 etc should be retained. ( The idea here is that someone with the same number represents another member of the household associated with 4201828)

On a side note, please don't do this till the end, if you make any change to the field rules in "customer" (for example stick in a couple of transformations like capitalization) all the action script in the "phone" field "Canwritefield" event disappear.
