Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server Operating System and Hardware

Hello - I am new to A5v6/v7 beta and am looking into the best hardware and OS to purchase for my network. I am planning on developing a runtime version of a billing system using A5v6 or v7. I plan on also generating web pages and using the WAS to access the system via the web. I will have 10 concurrent users accessing the runtime version and about the same number accessing the web version. My question is on the best server configuration and to hear any one else's experiences with different configurations.

    Operating System:
    1) My initial thought is to use Windows Server 2003. Any advantages/disadvantages to this? I have never used this before. I have used NT in the past.
    2) What about using desktop based OS (i.e. XP Pro) as the "server"?
    3) Other OS that would be easy to learn from a maintenance standpoint?

    Hardware:
    1) Does anyone have recommendations on brands of servers that are good / not good for a small business? Dell? IBM?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks - Traci

Windows 2000 Server reached mainstream end of life on June 30, 2005 which means Microsoft will not longer be releasing free patches for it or be providing per-incident support (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...rt/lifecycle/). That's reason enough for me to go with 2003.

XP Pro is limited to 10 concurrent connections. This is strictly enforced by the OS on a local network so if there is anyone trying to use the "server" other than your 10 runtime users, such as to use a connected printer, someone is going to be locked out. Additionally, while MS does not strictly limit TCP/IP connections (web users), you are still restricted to 10 concurrent connections, including local users, by the MS licnse agreement.

You can find Microsoft's official stement on the limitation at http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314882

It sounds like Windows server 2000 or 2003 are the only supported operating systems that will allow the number of connections you need.

      Windows Server 2003 Small Business

Thanks for the response, Lenny! That is helpful. Do you know if A5 can run on Windows Small Business Server 2003 or does it need the standard Windows Server 2003?

It will run on either one.

          Novell

Where I work, our server is a Novell server. For file sharing applications, it works very well.

For a file server that is just fine. But for the Web Application Server, you need to actually run Alpha on the server. In this case, you need a Windows server.
