Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    check box-list box on form

    Hi all,
I am looking for a way to put a check box-list box or a multi select list box directly on a form and not on an xdialog box. I need this to be on the form and can't find a way to do it. Does anyone have a way to do this? Has anyone else done this using alpha 5 V6?
    Thanks,
    Walter

      Hi,
Thanks but I am not looking for a multi-state button, I need a check box-list box or a multi select list box. Does anyone know how to do this directly on the form and not in an xdialog box? The xdialog box will not do for my situation and I can't find a way to do it directly on the form.
      Thanks again,
      Walter

        Hi Walter,

I asked this same question a little while ago. Apparently it's not available. I ended up having to program each checkbox by hand and not have the ability to change values for the checkboxes without later programming.

This is a feature that I believe needs to be added at some point.

Check the web help, index, Check Box List Box (Form)
          There can be only one.

There are a couple of approaches to this. Can you tell us what you are wanting to display on this check box list? Is it a static list across all records or will it change based on the current record on the form?

              Hi again,
I have a form to enter in care levels for a retirement home. I was looking for the check box-list box to be a static list across all records, but if it can change depending on an earlier selection in the form (like care level)that would be even better, for example a different list of amenities for each care level. The check box-list box is for amenities that the room at that particular care level might have (it is a list of about 30). The client may want to add or delete amenities at a later date which is why they want a check box-list box, so it will not affect the layout of the form if changes are made.
              Thanks again,
              Walter

                Hi Stan,
Thanks for the help but "Check Box List Box (Form)" in the online help only tells you how to open an xdialog box with a check box-list box automatically from the form, it doesn't tell you how to put one on the form. Thanks anyway I appreciate the effort. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.
                Thanks again,
                Walter

                  Ok,

So now assuming that you have your check list, what will it do? For instance, Lets say you have a patient named "Jim Chapman", and you have checked "34 Inch Computer Monitor", and "Assign pretty attendant". Two out of ten possible amenities offered.

After checking these items, what do you want to happen? Next time you pull up "Jim Chapman", do you want to see these two items checked?

If so it sounds like you really have a one-to-many set here and I would think the approach would be to create the blank 'amenity' records when a new patient is added. Now you have a one-to-many set and you can easily display a browse of the child records and check which ever one's you needed. This browse could be filtered to show only appropriate amenities based on patient type.

                  Jim

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the advice and might have to do it that way but I would really like to know if there is a way to put a check box-list box on a form.:) If anyone knows how to do this please let me know or if anyone knows that this is not possible in version 6 please let me know that as well. I thank everyone for the help they have given me so far but I really just want to know if a check box-list box is possible on a form regardless of static, changing or what it is for. Can a check box-list box like the one that is explained how to create in the help menu for xdialog boxes possible for a form? Please understand I really appreciate all the advice, and thank you all for your help. If anyone knows if this is possible please let me know.
Thanks you all for your help,
                    Walter :)

                      Hello Beach_bar,

You can embed lists, but check box lists are only possible (as far as I know) by using a linked table, by creating your own User Object (not easy) or by using a third party ActiveX object. We are told that we will be able to embed Xdialog boxes in forms in version 8, but that is not available to us now. The other approach would be to create your entire form in Xdialog.

That said, the functionality you are wanting to achieve is probably quite doable, but I don't know what it is :-)

If what I explained earlier is not what you want, you can easily link in a child table that will display it's total contents for every record in the parent table. This would allow you to have a check box list that would display for every parent record. And using xbasic you could change the list as you navigate through parent records or using the list do some routine and clear the checkboxes. Again, if we know what you were trying to achieve with this checkbox list, we might be able to help more.

                      Good luck,
                      Jim

                        Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I suppose I'll abandon the idea of the check box-list box for this project. I do have a few other solutions to my particular problem and I'll have to use one of them. Thank you for your patients and help.:)
                        Thanks again,
                        Walter
