Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

WSAETIMEDOUT Messages with A5V6 Email Functions

We are getting intermittent WSAETIMEDOUT messages when trying to send emails with an A5V6 application. For the most part, the email function works fine. But when the WSAETIMEDOUT message appears, A5V6 email capability goes away for an entire day. It seems to solve itself after doing a system backup with Windows Explorer. Can someone tell me what causes this problem and how to make it go away. The message doesn't affect normal email capability, just those messages generated by A5V6 applications. Again, the problem is intermittent. It occurs about once every week or two, but when it does, we lose email function for the day.

I'd appreciate some input on this topic.

    Thanks,

    Deb Welch

Re: WSAETIMEDOUT Messages with A5V6 Email Functions

I guess no one has any ideas about this problem. It gets worse. After years of testing email functions from my desktop, I have lost the ability to send emails through Alpha5. I get a WSAECONNREFUSED message indication the servers is not responding. I've checked my email settings and they are correct. I can send and receive emails through the server, but not with the Alpha5V6 email function. After following another thread, I checked my Norton Firewall settings and Alpha5.exe is allowed.

Has anyone experienced a change or loss of function with Alpha5 email functions. I'm not doing anything funky ... just using the Tools option on the menu bar and trying to send a simple email using the same settings I've used for years but the WSAECONNREFUSED message appears. I'm running Windows XP Pro, Alpha5 Version 6 on a local area network with a router that connects me to a high speed internet provider. I would question the router, put nothing has changed in the software setup. I would question the server, put emails work fine outside Alpha5.

At this point, I'd appreciate wild guesses that might trigger a thought. I even tried changing the email settings to use mail.yahoo.com with my user name and password for that account (which works for me everyday), put the problem still persists.

This may or may not be related to the problem in the first post as both internet providers are the same (other than user name and password) and the settings have worked for years. In the first post, the problem is intermittent and goes away the next day. In this post, the problem persists, sending emails no longer works.

      Deb,

Just a shot in the dark...

Doublecheck your XP firewall as I have had it reset itself to the default of being on many times with one of my computers.

Also, when the problem first started, did anything change on the computer..ie; XP updates, new programs installed, a utility tool such as registry mechanic being run...etc.

Re: WSAETIMEDOUT Messages with A5V6 Email Functions

        MikeC,

Thanks for your response. I fixed my Desktop WSAECONNREFUSED problem by changing the account information on my email settings. In the past, my incoming and outgoing email account was hargray.com. I changed it to webmail.hargray.com and now my Alpha5 email function works fine. I am changing this setting on the office computers that were receiving the WSAETIMEDOUT message and hopefully that problem will be fixed as well. Considering the symptoms, I'm surprised the email function was working at all versus intermittent hangs that corrected themselves overnight. I'll let you know what the final outcome is, but it may take a few weeks to ensure we have solved the problem.

Thanks again for taking the time to think about this post and sending me a reply.
