Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runs noticeably faster than V6.

Has anyone else but me noticed this? V7 runs appreciably faster than V6. Also, the word is that the final version of V7 will also load faster - more like V5!

That would be welcome news. I hope that applies to object refresh as well.

Alpha Five is still multi-threaded. But in V6 and previous versions, there were always 2 threads used for everything, even simple operations and UI repaints where there was no need for multiple threads. This was an artifact from old old code that we were finally able to rework. As a result, multiple threads are used only when needed and the "expensive" context switching is kept to a minimum.

And as Martin mentioned, even more improvements have been made to the loading of Alpha Five. What you guys have now should be a bit quicker than V6, but the next release will be even faster.

I just tested form object refresh. It is still slow, sadly.

A more helpful response would be to attach a sample database that showed what you mean by 'form object refresh' still being slow. Then we could duplicate the problem and see if we can speed it up.

              Object Refresh Test

              Selwyn,

The attached sample is one that Mike Tompson posted recently.

Push the "green" & "yellow" test buttons.

Try it in v.7 & v.5. It is instantaneous in v.5; in v.7 you can watch it repaint.

putting in ui_freeze(.t.) and ui_freeze(.f.) will speed it up considerably.

Unless I am mistaken it would seem that ui_freeze only displays the change all at once. It still takes just as long to update the change, though. So it is an illusion of sorts, not a speed enhancement.

Yes, I think you are mistaken. The effect of ui_freeze() is more than an illusion. The script runs faster. Did you actually try it?

You are correct, it is faster. I inadvertently loaded v6. instead of v.7 for my test. However, there is some unpleasant screen flashing when you use the ui_freeze(.f.)

Yes, we are looking at that. I did see a screen flash when ui_freeze(.f.) was executed.

I have noticed that when I am using ui_freeze() and updating a table which is part of the current set (in the current esssion) that I can see the browses refreshing as the code is executed. This also happened in V6.

we have now addressed this. the repaint is nearly instantaneous in v7, and a ui_freeze(.t.) is not required. this is significant improvement over v6.
