Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printer configuration

We recently purchased a new computer and printer, and in trying to set it all up Alpha continues to reply that there is no printer configured. Is there a place where we can go in to default our new printer to all the forms in Alpha? Windows is already set up to default our new printer and other programs are printing to this new printer. Please help. Thank you.

    Re: Printer configuration

    several issues could apply

1 is your forms set up for a particular printer that is now gone?

2 do you have the new printer set up as the default?

3 have you reinstalled alpha/ are the default alpha printers showing in mycomputer/control panel/printers?

    Hope this gets you started

      Re: Printer configuration

Possibly you installed alpha 5 before you put in a printer? Did you copy alpha to your computer or install it?

A new printer has never posed a problem for me unless I had a report that used a designated printer. Once the designated printer was gone, there was no longer anyplace to send the report and it will not default to anything else.

I would check the registry files and be sure there is a software entry for a5v7. This should have an area where the printers for alpha are set up. You need to have adminstrator rights to install alpha and get the registry written to. Is it possible your it copied the old hard drive to the new hard drive?

In control panel/printers, there should be printers that alpha set up as their designates.

Last thing I can think of is to unload alpha(not your data) and remove all entries in the registry, delete the folder for alpha and do a complete reinstall.

        Re: Printer configuration

        Hi Dave,
        Thank you.
I have had all kinds of problems and then some, so I re-installed Alpha as you suggested this morning, and I was still having tons of problems. Then I decided to download the patches available, and everything is restored and fixed except those particular forms are still printing to the old printer. (We had re-installed the old printer so those forms would print and I now have both printers set up.) Fine with me. As long as they print. I still cannot seem to get the forms to re-set to the new printer. Maybe now that I downloaded the patches. Nope guess not; I just tried it on that form and it is still printing to the old printer. Got me. Two printers is fine til I figure it out.
        Thanks again for your help.

          Re: Printer configuration

I am guessing your reports are set to print to certain printers. To change this go in control panel, select reports tab, select the report you are looking for & open it in design mode. Then from the top menu select Report-Properties-report properties. In the report property form click the printer tab. There you will see the options you will have for that report. If you want to select printer everytime you print a report select "Use default Printer"

            Re: Printer configuration

In the Report Properties (Report->Properties->Report Properties->Printer tab), you can specify to use the Windows default printer or set it up to use a specific printer. My guess is that whoever made the reports, specified the printer here. Change it to the Windows default and you should be good to go.

Edit: As Jack said - replies crossed.

              HTML Code:

2 do you have the new printer set up as the default?

3 have you reinstalled alpha/ are the default alpha printers showing in mycomputer/control panel/printers?
              hence the very first question?
