Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import a PDF document to an external folder

    My work order database is running on a server,
    I want to be able to create a button that will allow me to browse to a file on a network attached computer, select a PDF file, upload it to a folder on the server, and insert a hyperlink to the PDF file, in a column in the db table marked attachments.

    Someone looking at the work order can read the description of work needed then pull up the attached file for more details
    I hope this makes sense

    Thanks
    Mitt

    Doable in one manner or another

    browse to a file on a network attached computer
    accomplished with ui_get_file()

    select a PDF file
    accomplished with ui_get_file() specifying the file type to be visible

    upload it to a folder on the server
    accomplished by using file.copy() on the result of the above

    insert a hyperlink to the PDF file, in a column in the db table marked attachments
    not a hyperlink but you can use sys_open() as the event code for a button on a form or for the onrowdblclick event for a browse. Writing the file name to a record is nothing especially difficult.
    There can be only one.

      'Prompt for a filename and store result in a variable called 'upload'.
      dim prmpt_title as c
      dim prmpt_filter as c
      dim prmpt_default as c
      dim prmpt_flag as c

      prmpt_title = ""
      prmpt_filter = "(*.*)"
      prmpt_default = ""

      DIM SHARED upload AS C

      upload = ui_get_file( a5_eval_expression(prmpt_title,local_variables()),prmpt_filter,prmpt_default,"X")

      file.copy(upload,10.246.20.250\e:\database\attachments,"")

        Re: Import a PDF document to an external folder

        file.copy takes two parameters, you have three. Both must be specified as character strings..... You must specify the destination filename, not just the location

        If you can use the network address as you are trying it would be

        file.copy(upload,"10.246.20.250\e:\database\attachments"+chr(92)+file.filename_parse(upload,"NE"))

        to give the destination file the same name and extension as the source.

        If the e: drive is network attached as you mentioned

        file.copy(upload,"e:\database\attachments"+chr(92)+file.filename_parse(upload,"NE"))
        There can be only one.

          This works on my development computer, but on a runtime computer I get error Too many Parameters.

          dim prmpt_filter as c

            Re: Import a PDF document to an external folder

            If it works on the development machine we know the code is right. What is different about the runtime machine? Does it have the same mapping to the server?

              Re: Import a PDF document to an external folder

              Hello,
              I am very new to Alpha Five and have a basic question about this post. The code listed above does compile correctly but throws an error about an Alias Required (Script:OnPush line:23). I am trying to put a file on an FTP server through the form. First, is this possible? Second, I replaced "\\Server1\Work Orders\attachments" with "MyFtpServerAddress". Thank you
