Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report to print multi-part checks

(Oops I put this in the wrong forum.)

I want to print a paycheck onto a 3 part check (like Quickbooks does). How do I get the detail to repeat in each voucher below the check?

Two subreports with the same data looks like it might do the trick but in order to space it correctly do I use the detail section or the group footer - or both - one for each voucher? The detail will be 6 to 8 lines per check.

If I could get 2 group footers and no detail that might work, but my group is on check no. - what would I use for a 2nd group?

Another idea is to link the detail table twice to the header - but still, where do I put the 2nd subreport?

Oops, and I didn't pick that up and left an answer there as well. :)

I haven't time to test it out just now but I would just use one expanded detail section with the detail fields placed multiple times.

Re: Report to print multi-part checks

I was able to use 2 sub-reports for the one-to-many table in the detail section without a group footer. But I am getting a blank 2nd page. I have been thru the margins and checked the placement of all the fields and nothing seems to be out of bounds.

I think the white space is being pushed beyond the page limit and shrink to band is not removing it. But that may not be the case either since I have a line of text which prints at the bottom and it is placed correctly - if the shrink to band were not doing its job, wouldn't that last line be pushed onto the 2nd page?

I did have a page break which I later removed before I increased the margins so my report body is 7 1/2 x 10. Could it be a ghost?

Are your margins totaling 1 inch"
        is your paper 8.5x11?
        What printer are you using?
did you check suppress blanks in both subs and the main report as well?

I have had to play with this a lot to remove the second blank. page break did not always work either.

I can't believe how hard this was to get right. I sized the 1st subreport to approximate the space that section will take so that I could gauge the amount of white space needed before the 2nd stub started. Getting it sized right finally stopped the blank pages. I wanted a footer in each stub but to get it placed right I added it to the top of the 2nd stub and then used the group footer justified to the bottom for the 2nd stub.

Just opening up Quickbooks to print the check would have taken less time!

            Robin,

Are you writing a payroll system??

Re: Report to print multi-part checks

              Hi Dave,
No, it is more of a employee record system since I do use a payroll service. The service won't print the check style I need, and I do not track W/taxes in QB (they don't make a payroll check either unless you use their service). So it made sense to me to use Alpha to create manual checks when I need them.

Since the report is working, now I am trying to get the form to change color based on which bank account I am using to write the check. I thought a could change a frame's fillcolor property but this is not giving me the expected result when fetching thru records. Any ideas on that? Even using 2 frames of different colors in a conditional object is not repainting the form correctly.

Re: Report to print multi-part checks

                Robin,

I have never dealt with changing colors. I believe Stan and some others have. Maybe it would be a good idea to search the posts for this and then make a seperate post if you need to. I vaguely remember some posts about this and think it has some xbasic on the print init.

                Good luck.

                Dave

As a footnote: When I ran all our stores, I made a payroll program in v4 to do all of it, but when I was where we used a payroll service, they brought us our checks(completely made out) the day before issuance. I am working on a payroll module right now for sale with one of my other programs. It will have the ability to fill in the preprinted checks or generate a generic check. Your post shows some issues I will face shortly.
