Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Excel 2007 import?

    Excel 2007 import?

I have a frequently used import operation that brings data in from an Excel 3.0 file (old operation carried forward from A4). I am planning to upgrade to Excel 2007 very soon and found that Excel 2007 can't save files in 3.0 format.

Can A5V7 import from an Excel 2007 file or would I be better off creating a CSV file?

    Jas,

I do the csv file 3 - 5 times a week. I import it into a table, massage it and then append it to one of my main tables. I found it the easiest way to do it in My case. Yours may be different.

Also note that excel 2007 can't save in dbf format.

Exactly what features of excel 2007 are worth the "upgrade"? Sounds like a vista type upgrade to me. Makes money for microsoft but for you..........
      There can be only one.

        Dave,

I am massaging the file in Excel with macros. Hadn't thought of importing the raw CSV into a table and massaging there. Might be easier but would have to remember to clear the table after appendiing to master database. Will give it a try. Thanks.

        Stan,

As to why upgrade, needed some YE business expense so purchased Office 2007 Pro upgrade. Now re-thinking maybe better to wait for next PC upgrade.

          Re: Excel 2007 import?

          Jim,

I actually delete the import dbf at file level after I do the append. That way I still have the(in my case) needed support files. Even the index is still there.

The file comes in as an import to a named table that does not exist, I change field names, modify records, and uniquely append. Since costs may have changed, I have to update the costs from the imported table, then I delete all the records that are not in the imported table as this keeps the inv table clean.

We are using excel 2007 as a gateway for this operation from the main dealership tables. They can write a csv file, but not a dbf.

Delete the table at file level after you append. It is easier to remake it with the import.

I will send you some code tomorrow how it is done.

                Thanks Dave,

After looking it over, I think it's easier for me to use Excel macros to massage the data because of the way I get the file from eBay. On multiple item transactions it includes a transaction header line that I don't want to use so I have to force some data from there to one of the line item transactions. I am using the data in a table as a lookup for the actual manual review/posting of each sale to the master database. (It's early - not sure if all that will make sense).

Or it's a good chance to learn the power of xbasic and the options that are available to write a script to handle data manipulation.

The concepts are the same, the language and methods a little different.

                    Al,

I understand where you are coming from but I am supposed to be retired, my PT endeavor selling on-line has turned into a full-time+ job and having spent most of my career in IT I'm not interested in learning another language that I may or may not use but another year or 2. I don't have the time nor the inclination for the learning curve.
