Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email Field

Am I right to think that you can only use an Alpha Five Email Smart Field in a form, not in a browse table.

    Re: Email Field

I believe you are correct, but could you not use the OnRowDblClick browse event to call up the Alpha Email client??

Thanks Mike, all the email stuff is new to me and I'm more of an A5 user than a Tech person, I will give that a go.

        Hi Judith,

You could also just put the field in question on the form itself and set it to a smart field for the email.

        Good luck

          Re: Email Field

Thanks Cheryl I have done that and it works well!

I always feel frustrated there is so much to know on alpha 5 and I feel as if I know just the tip of the iceberg. Wish my boss would just let me hide away for a few months so I could really get my head around it all but thats unlikely. Thanks for your help.

Good luck with that. Not only will it be difficult to get your boss to allow for that, I seriously doubt that a 'few months' would be enough time to really get your head around it all.

I have been doing this longer than a few months and STILL get frustrated. I believe I can be doing this for 20+ years and will still find times where there is frustration.

Alpha is a very powerful tool and I doubt any of us will ever fully know 'how to' do all the things that can be done.

That is what this forum is for. When we get frustrated, we first take a walk or do whatever we need to in order to clear our head. We then look at the problem again and if we still can't find our answer, we start a thread.

              Hi Cheryl,
I don't know about you, but it seems like is always after I start the thread is when the fog clears! Perhaps typing out the problem is what brings the order my brain requires. :o

                Hi Robin,

I have solved many of my own problems during the process of preparing to post a new thread. When drafting what I want to say so that others can understand what I need, the answer is right there in what I am typing.

I also find a lot of my answers when preparing sample db's to attach to my post and writing out the steps to duplicate the issue. This is all part of troubleshooting.

I am sure you have seen many threads of mine (and others) where there is a lot of brainstorming going on. Somebody finally uses a key word or phrase, and voila, the light bulb turns on.

This forum and those within this community are what make Alpha so great!
