Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

CSV import won't dup check?

    CSV import won't dup check?

I created an operation to import a monthly csv file to an existing database. When I select 'Yes' to check for duplicate records, the import quits after the first record and does no importing. If I select to 'No' to check for duplicate records, the import completes normally but duplicate records are imported. Is it not possible to dup check on a CSV file during import?

I have another similar operation that imports from an Excel 3.0 file and it works properly.

Anyone have a clue on this? I always seem to struggle with import operations. The CSV file contains appropriate header records and there are no blank fields in any of the records.

    Jim,

I cannot answer your question, but can say that I import a csv file 3 times a week. It is imported into a table(empty and new), modified slightly, appended from and to another table uniquely. The import table is then deleted at the file level so the support files remain. It works well for me.

      Dave,

You had mentioned that in a previous post. I'd rather not have to go through the extra steps if I can help it because the data is good coming i except for an occasional possible dup. I see no reason why the CSV file won't dup check but there must be a reason.

Re: CSV import won't dup check?

I'm a little confused. Where are you selecting to remove dups? I tried importing a file and found no place to check to remove dups.

I always guard my original table by doing as Dave said and import into a new file, process and check for validity and then append. Not really any more to do as you can also just create a script to run the operations. So still just one click to do your import.

        Edit:
Whoops... back up the truck. I forgot you were importing into an existing file - that's where the option is. Let me try again and get back to you.

Re: CSV import won't dup check?

Created a simple 3 field table, 2 chars, 1 numeric. Added 2 recs to it. Created a .csv file with 2 recs, one of which was a dup. Created the import and asked to remove dups specifying the 1st field to test only and to just ignore the record. All works as it should.

So without some more details, will be hard to check. You should verify for yourself that this works on your system be creating a simple table and import file as I did and run the operation. If it works then it could be that Alpha does not like the field names you use, there is corrupt data in the first rec., etc.

            Doug/Dave,

I set up 2 operations as Dave suggested. First doing a straight import into a new file, then an append to the master table. That works fine, eliminates the duplicates and is only 1 extra step. Thanks for your suggestions and replies.
