Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    table field lookup

    I have a field 'B' that performs a table lookup to fill another field 'C'. I am now filling field 'B' with a prior lookup in field 'A'. Since making the change, field 'B' is not doing the lookup using the value filled by the field 'A' lookup. My guess is the lookup data isn't actually posted, just displayed until I save the record.

    Is there a way to do a table lookup in a field that is filled from another table lookup?

    Re: table field lookup

    Hi Jim,

    It might be best to use the OnChange event of field 'A' to populate field 'C'. As far as I know, the only way a field rule table lookup is going to work is if you are 'manually' making your selection from the lookup table, which is no longer happening in field 'B' by adding the lookup in field 'A'.

      Cheryl,

      I'm not familiar with using the OnChange or other Events tab. Can you explain how I might do a lookup using the OnChange Event? Or where I can find about it?

        In the attached screenshot I have right clicked on the net cost field, chosen Events, then selected the onchange event. Code is simulated that would assign the lookup() expression to the prefer field (three down) and refresh its display.

          Stan,

          Thanks for the suggestion.

          To review, I am trying to fill the 'Category' field with a lookup from the 'Stock_Code' field which is filled by a prior database field lookup.

          I built the following Event for STOCK_CODE.OnChange:

          Category.value = lookup("listings.dbf","Stock_Code="+quote(Stock_Code),"Category")
          Category.refresh()

          However, I can't get anything to display in the Category field. What might I be overlooking? Might the Stock_Code value being filled by a prior lookup causing this?

          Sorry to be so dense.

          Jim

            Jim,

            Try the following:

            Code:

            dim vcStockCode as c
            vcStockCode = parentform:stock_code.value

            parentform:Category.value = lookup("listings.dbf","Stock_Code=var->vcStockCode","Category")
            parentform:Category.refresh()
            This of course assumes your category and stock_code fields on the form have the object names of category and stock_code.

              Cheryl,

              Gave your code a try. Added it to the Stock_Code OnChange Event but that didn't work. I still get no value in the Category field.

              When a field is filled from a lookup, as Stock_Code is filled from my first field (Transaction_Number) lookup, is the Stock_Code value actually filled in the field or just displays until the record is saved and then it fills the field?

                Time to see a sample of your database...

                When a field is filled from a lookup, as Stock_Code is filled from my first field (Transaction_Number) lookup
                If you have a table level field rule lookup defined it may be interfering with the code suggested.

                  OK, Stan, That would be appreciated. But, how do I slice off a sample? And I assume you need the form and associated lookup database sample too?

                    First try zipping up the whole thing if the data is not sensitive.

                    Control panel, Tools Menu, Zip Database.

                      I'd prefer not sending the entire database. If I were to duplicate the whole thing, then delete all but maybe 10-12 records, would that work for you? I appreciate your offer to look at it.

                      I've used various versions Alpha over the past 10+ years at my job and when I retired I continued to use it for my internet business. But, I have always struggled with issues whenever I was trying to automate things like lookups. My goal is to make life easier but the time spent getting them to work frustrates me.

                        That's fine. As long as there are enough records to make the lookup work.

                          Stan,

                          Here (I hope) are the files you requested. Let me know if you need anything else to check out my Lookup problem. The Form is eBay Sales, and again, what I would like to do to complete the modifications I've been working on is to have the Category field automatically filled from data residing in the jsenterprises database (actually named 'listings' in the live file) via looking up the Stock_Code field, which is filled via database Field Lookup (Trans_Key Field) upon entering the Tran_Key. Hope that all makes sense.

                            You didn't supply the listings.dbf so I'm not sure if this is what you want.

                              The database "jsenterprises" is the same database as listings - I changed the name when I duped it.
