Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Abort play_sound(*.wav)

I have a customer that wants to listen to recorded phone calls, which are stored as WAV files. I designed an app to do this, but found that once the file starts playing, it keeps playing until the end.

In many cases, they would like to abort the playback after a few seconds. Is this possible?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I assume you are using sys_open() since you give no details or did you discover another method?
    There can be only one.

      Bill,

Knowing how you are playing the .wav files is the only way to figure out an answer....I have done what you have by using sys_open, sys_shell, and utilizing OLE object embedded into a form--all of these methods used a player that was easily paused or turned off.

        play_sound() is an Xbasic function.

There is no way to cancel this. I would look for an ActiveX control to use as your audio player. This would likely give you play, pause and skip functionality as well.

            Bill,

I don't know how you have this set up for your user(s) but here is a way to stop the file...have your "Play" button (or however you are starting it) start the specific wave file--most likely set up using a variable to set the file location--then have your "stop" button use play_sound() with the variable set to "".

Or just use the activeX / OLE , sys_open, sys_shell methods.

              Re: Abort play_sound(*.wav)

Mike, your suggestion to use PLAY_SOUND("") worked perfectly. Thanks!

FWIW, I have a ui_msg_box appear ("Do you want to play it again?") after the user selects the file to play (the message box appears immediately, even while the file is playing). If the user clicks Yes, the file starts playing again, even if it hadn't finished playing. If he clicks No, it plays "", which effectively stops the playback.

This may be a very stupid question.
But where do you put this xbasic....
I wanted to put it on a button on a grid but I when I go into on click event and go to the text mode there is a place to delcare xbasic functions but when I input mine there and click save it just dissappears.

Can we only use this on actual a5w page?

                thanks!!

                  Claire,
This is a desktop forum and many of us do not have the expertise to answer for the webside.....I suggest you ask in a web forum for your version of Alpha.
