Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Predefined Label Definitions

I was recently creating a mailing label for a client and was getting strange results with the printing in V8- my printer (continuous form Tally) was printing my proof sets three times separated by a couple of inches. In an attempt to understand what was happening, I copied the predefined label template so that I could edit it (simply to see the dimensions) and all of my other predefined label definitions vanished.

I suspect they are contained in the A_SHARED.dbf file, but when I explore my A5V8 folder, the file date is 8/8/2005- obviously it hasn't changed. The file I am looking at is in my C:\Program Files\A5V8 directory.

Is this the correct folder? Is this even the correct file?

I printed the labels using V7, just to get them out, but would really like to solve this problem. Can anyone give me any guidance?

    Thanks,

    Chuck

    Re: Predefined Label Definitions

I have had the same problem. I used avery 5160 for one of my layouts and then proceeded to create a custom label. doing that seems to have wiped out all the predefined labels. Tried repairing installation, no luck. Tried total uninstall and re-install, no luck. Used regedit and purged EVERY line in registry referring to Alpha Five (i work for really big company and I KNOW they don't want me doing that) and re-installed again. Bingo, they're back! OH, OH-- as soon as I re-created the custom label, the regular pre-defined ones disappeared again. I think the first time I used "store custom size with label layout" method when it crashed (disappeared). The second time I went into predefined sizes and used "new" from the "use standard size from library". The end result was the same--they're gone. Please solve so I don't have to muck in the registry again. tnx.

      Re: Predefined Label Definitions

I created a custom label in Alpha Sports, and all the standard ones are still there. Build 1531-3075, not sure if that makes a difference. The only thing that I see amiss is that the example button on the genie appears to bring up a blank dialog. Otherwise works as designed.
If you can reproduce the problem you could send an example to Alpha as a bug report.

        Re: Predefined Label Definitions

By the way, the custom labels seem to be stored as blobs in A_Menus_System.dbf

This seems an odd place but that is the file that changed when I created a custom label.

          Re: Predefined Label Definitions

I'm not sure what info I would send. I have the very latest build and I certainly re-created the problem at least once. In order to do it again, I have to completely wipe A5 off the hard drive and wipe A5 from the registry as well. I am only evaluating the software (21 days left), so I am not even sure about sending a bug report. I have searched all the threads here.

            Re: Predefined Label Definitions

In Alpha 5, go to help, send a bug report and follow the prompts. It's pretty simple, but I would check again to make sure the standard labels aren't actually there before submitting.

If it is a bug, they are very responsive. If they can't reproduce it though, there isn't much they can do, that's why it's important to show in detail how you are getting this.

You can use a screenshot program to take before and after screenshots that shows the lack of labels. That isn't really showing them how to reproduce it but at least will show that it actually is a problem.

              Re: Predefined Label Definitions

I just had the same problem of creating a custom label def in A5V9 and having all the standard label defs vanish.

I fixed it by shutting down A5 and then removing the A_SHARED.* files from the %APPDATA% (C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 9\) folder.

It seems that the A_SHARED.* files are in the "C:\Program Files\A5V9" program folder UNTIL you create a custom def. Then they are copied to the %APPDATA% folder and the fun begins. By removing them from the %APPDATA% folder, A5 has to go back to using the A_SHARED.* files in the Program Files folder.

                Re: Predefined Label Definitions

Thank you Justus. I have been dealing with the same problem of loss of definitions in A5V10 and tried everything including complete reinstall but could not get them back.

Reported same to Alpha and they suggested reinstalling all "A_SHARED" files but in the program directory. That did not work.

Followed your instructions and they were restored perfectly. As you stated problem is related to where Alpha is looking for those files once you create a custom label.

                Thanks Again.

                  Hi Justus,

I have the same on the "Custom label" problem and I cannot fix it.

I fixed it by shutting down A5 and then removing the A_SHARED.* files from the %APPDATA% (C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 9\) folder.
I could not find the folder("%appdata%") in my folder. Is it created by WindowXP, Alpha5 or Do I have to create a folder?.

I also attached the Alpha5 Settings Screenshot for your understanding. In here, I can see it on the Shared path (%Appdata%) but I can not find it from Window Folder.

                    He means

I fixed it by shutting down A5 and then removing the A_SHARED.* files from the %APPDATA% also known as (C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 9\) folder.

You will find the directory on your machine

                    (C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 9\) folder.
                    There can be only one.

                      Stan,

                      C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 9\
                      I cannot find C:\Documents and Settings\john koh\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 9\ from my computer.

I just thought about it.... Because, I do not this directory, I may not not able to Re-load the default label setting.

Only thing I can suggest is to look in the All Users driectory just above your named directory.

John.....make sure your Windows' folder settings are showing (unhide) all your hidden folders and then maybe you will see the Application folder...saying it could still be hidden (although I have never tried to hide some but not all but this could be a possible).
