Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha5 locks up when clicking x-y formula button

    Hello!

When updating field rules, under lookup tab, and single-clicking the x-y button to the right of the linking field (to write a formula): Alpha5 locks up and won't respond to anything (clicking any buttons or the X (close) button).

I have to "Cntrl-Alt-Del" and go to Task Manager to shut down Alpha5.

I have installed the latest patch and rebooted, and it still locks up when I click on the x-y button.

Please let me know if you have a solution to this problem

    Thanks......Michael

Re: Alpha5 locks up when clicking x-y formula button

is working just fine on mine
could be lookup table corruption issues
could be current table corruption issues

    try this:

    make a new dummy table
    make a new lookup table

in the new table make one of the fields a lookup to the new lookup table
then click on the same button for link or display order and see if you still have the problem

Or try it in a copy of the Alphasports example rather than your database.

        Martin & Al,

Thanks for the idea of testing on another database.

I pulled up the invoice_items table field rules in the AlphaSports database and clicked on the x-y button on the Product_ID lookup--> it locked up the same way as it did using my database.

If I "Cntr-Alt-Del" and go to Windows Task Manager, I get the attached warning that the system is waiting on a response from me. I have carefully searched the desktop for anything it is waiting on, to no avail.

I had an idea, though. A few weeks back I was using 2 monitors by extending my Windows desktop to the 2nd monitor. I double-checked to make sure only 1 monitor is now setup, because this issue is acting like a dialog box is open, but hidden from view (ie, on a 2nd monitor that is no longer attached). However, the settings are setup for a single monitor, so I don't think that is the issue.

Please let me know if you think of any other things to try.

        Thanks,

        Michael

The dialog is opening outside of the scope of your single monitor.

Write down your license # and then delete all of the registry entries for Alpha 5 and then start A5.

The registry entries will rebuild - you'll re-enter your license and move on...

Another approach that has worked for me is to increase substantially the screen resolution. Then drag the offending dialog to screen center. Then restore normal resolution.

              Gentlemen,

Thanks for the great help!! Al, I tried your idea of deleting the registry keys and restarting, and it worked great!!!!

Tom, I just got your posting. If this happens again, I'll try changing the screen resolution as you said, so I can test out both options.

              Thanks again!! Michael

Glad to hear it worked for you. Tom's method may have been more gentle. Some day I'll look at the actual settings and reset only those needed.

                Ok maybe tomorrow...

Nearly 13 years later and this post helped another user. I couldn't figure out why A5 locked up when I clicked on the formula button. I read this post, plugged in my second monitor, clicked on the button - and there was the window! I dragged it back to the center and now I hope all is well. So, thanks for posting this problem and solution so long ago!
