Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Quickbooks and Alpha Talking To Each Other

    Hello all

At the moment I run my own EPOS application and it runs flawlessly.
I am thinking of deploying Quickbooks as my accounts application.

My question is how easy is it to get Alpha to talk to Quickbooks so as to update stock control levels.

    Regards

    John

It is very easy with the QODBC driver. Very seamless integration can be achieved. There was great demonstration of this at the recent conference. Al Buchholz is the resident expert around here using it. I have not done so yet but I will be using the QODBC driver to integrate with my application in the next month or so.

    Regards,

    Jeff

Do you know if alpha can lookup a quickbooks file or do you have to import the data into alpha and vice versa.

      I hope this makes sense

Re: Quickbooks and Alpha Talking To Each Other

        Hi John,

ODBC, and Specifically, QODBC are live connections to the data between Alpha 5 and whatever the ODBC driver is designed for. So the answer is that there is no importing, it is operating on the live data.

          Hi Ira

          Thanks for the reply

My ability is limited to field rules and action scripting.

Are you saying that my EPOS application will be able to lookup stock for a sale and then deplete the stock level by the quantity sold by looking directly into a quickbooks file

          Regards

That's a tough question. I don't know your ability, but you can do most of it in action scripting and then finalize it in xbasic.

The first step that I suggest to anyone doing this is to work through the process manually. Do the Alpha steps and then use Quickbooks to do the things that you need it to do by typing in the information directly into Quickbooks.

Once you are satisfied that this does what you want, then we can look at how this can be automated.

Start with action scripting and SQL statements.

What you are looking to do can be done.

                  Thanks for the input Al

My ability is action scripting and field rules and a little bit of xbasic. Ultimately I get the result I need in the end. I use the script recorder to work out my xbasic steps and trawl through the message board for my advanced answers.

                  Any help would be appreciated.

I am going to download the simplist version of qickbooks to see if I can achieve my goal. Also looking into the driver need for alpha

                  Regards

I think you have to buy that from Alpha.

I still have to figure that bit out myself

What do you mean by "budget information".

This is an expression I'm not familiar with in the UK, maybe I will have a different name for it.
