Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Validation of 2 bugs that have re-appeared ...

Before pressing on with a bug re-submission, I would like to ask for validation on 2 bugs ....

    1. Editor data integrity issue. If i have more than 1 script opened in the editor and I save one, it overlays the other as well. This was originally reported by me, was fixed(per Selwyn), and has come back. I have had a number of scripts overlayed ... now i just open one at a time ... big pain. I emailed selwyn (who originally emailed me to tell me it was fixed) and asked if it might have been regressed ..... no answer.

    2. Global functions not being recognized immediately after being created. Yes they work, but they are not recognized by the smarttext(or whatever its called) until Alpha is recycled. I did not originally report this, but know that it was fixed at one point and has now resurfaced.

Glenn, on the first item I couldn't replicate the issue you're describing. We probably need step by step instructions for us to follow. A sample database for us to use would help validate or disprove the issue, too.

    Here's what I did.

I opened an example database and went to the code page of the control panel. I defined and saved a new global script (xbasic). Without closing the code editor I minimized it and then began a second global script on the code page. At this point the code editor window has 3 tabs on it. Tab1 is my first script. Tab2 is the second. Tab3 is for the Interactive Window.

I was able to save the second script without overwriting the first.

    What are you doing differently?

      Tom,
Thanks for taking a shot at it. To be quite honest with you, not sure what the sequence of events are that causes this, but every once in a while after having 2 scripts open, one is overwritten completely by the other. I spent time to put together test db and submit as bug the last time I had this problem and When Selwyn said it was fixed, I was never really sure it was fixed, but kinda moved past it since selwyn said it was. Always hesitant to open more than one script though .... Im sure you can understand why ..... who wants a couple of hours of programming written over. Guess I will have to stick to opening one at a time to be 100% sure it wont happen again.

I will say though, Im surprised I didnt even get a response from Selwyn ..... maybe on vacation ...

In applications as complex as Alpha Five it would not surprise me for this kind of problem to crop up occasionally, but a "bug report" that is not reproducible is not likely to engender much of a response from the Alpha development team. Maybe next time it happens you can jot down some specifics, though I know how hard this can be.

In my own work when I am working with multiple scripts, or when I am working with multiple forms, I ALWAYS save my work before switching to the another window. As illustrated in the example I developed this afternoon I do not leave edits pending in one window and then jump to another. This is partly because this is how I do it in all other applications (spreadsheets, word processing files, etc.) and in part I do this because I don't trust my memory to keep track of where the unsaved edits are and where they're not! Maybe I've just been lucky but I haven't see the situation you describe even once in many years of coding.

          Tom,
I hear ya, and I too try to use practices such as saving before moving to something else (even though we shouldnt have to). Unfortunately there is the human factor and the possibility that just once after programming some intense logic, you might forget and would hope that the software would always protect you against data integrity issues ..... especially when pointed out there is a possibility that something like that might exist. With that said, even though it is difficult to collect info on something that only happens under certain situations, I will just have to be more aware in order to catch those sequences so I can re-submit bug report to alpha.

I would like to say though that I strongly disagree with the method of putting the whole thing on the end user to debug. Alpha should partner with anyone who even thinks there is a bug with the software and it should be on them to say its not or to provide debug code to help debug hard to capture issues. Amazingly, this seems to be the way it is when a new release comes out, but as soon as things settle with the new release ...... well, lets just say, there is a noticable difference!!.

          Thanks again Tom ....
