Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Huh? I don't see no "James Stewart" in the membership list for this board. Wonder who he is? Anyway, I don't understand what he is telling you not to do? You can't backup often enough. So, I would suggest that you back up whatever files you want, whenever you want. Use a rotating backup system and also backup to CD or DVD. That way you will protect your work from accidents.

      Re: Protecting the finished app....

      Sorry, it was James Andrews.
      It wasn't the matter of making backup...
      I was doing following:
      whenever I changed something on developing PC with full A5 V8 desktop, I make install.exe with runtime included in install.
      Then I go to server, move dbf files(because I don't want to lose saved/stored data in it) and then run install.exe
      After install is finished, I move back dbf files.
      In phone conversation with James, he strongly reccomended to not doing so, and now I can see his point. In the past I had some strange things happening, but not since I'm developing directly on the server.
      Still, I miss things from other programs like version number...how can you tell what is the current developing version? Or if you are developing for diferent users, how can you tell which is which version?
      That is standard part of VB, Delphi....

        All of that info is there.

        See documents on
        Version()
        version("K")
        version("U")
        version("V")
        version("B")
        version("E")
        A5_SYSTEM_ADDIN_VERSION()
        a5_istrialversion()

        win_memory_info()
        win_motherboard()
        win_services()
        win_time()

        In general assume info is there, you just have to find which function and where in the documents.:D

          In addition to what Ira said, see the attached image for giving your applications their own version #.

            I guess Ira gave me keywords for search in help file, right?
            I saw this from Peter, but I never tested the use of it.
            Can you give me an advice how can I split two different versions of the same app and not to have problems in the future with developing it further on?
            Please tell only from experience because I have to know if it is tested or I have to play with it....Thanks guys...

              I probably don't really understand your question. But I guess if I had 2 versions of the same app, I would keep them in 2 different folders.

              BTW: the version() function that Ira indicated returns info on which version of A5 you have, not your app. To get the latter requires some convoluted code, I believe.

                A5_getAppVersionNumber() returns the version number you have set in the network optimize utility.

                  Just curious, has anyone tried MoleBox with A5V8?

                  If this can do for AlphaFive what it claims to do for other similar development tools it seems it would be of great interest to many AlphaFive developers.

                      I would be glad to download the trial version and test it. Unfortunately, all I would likely discover is that I was not able to make it work. And most likely, that would be the result of my own lack of understanding rather than the limitations of MoleBox.

                        I have MoleBox Pro, purchased for a Visual FoxPro project a couple of years ago and recently upgraded. I have Alpha5 v8, recently moved from FileMaker so it will take me a little time to become proficient enough in A5 to really test the abilities of MoleBox. I will be happy to post the results at that time...

                          I put the following code in my autoexec so I could display on the main start screen shown below

                          Code:
                          dim global versionnumber as n
                          versionnumber = A5_GetAppVersionNumber()
                          The autoexec script is password protected.

                          Hope it all helps.

                            Dave,

                            You can also just put A5_GetAppVersionNumber() as a calculated field on your main start screen.

                              I know bob, but I have so much on the start screen already and it seems to work better in autoexec. Bit spotty as a calc.
