Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Form MenuTree - events, xbasic, etc.

Attached is an image of a sample form based menu tree attached to a variable. I would like to use it as a form loading menu. But....

    1. When I click on "Accounting" or "Billing", the variable returns "Billing Sheets". Similarly if I click on "General", it returns "Clients". This makes it unreliable to use as a menuing system. Is there a workaround?

    2. I can "collapse" the expanded menu by reloading it - no problem. But how do I expand all?

    3. The OnChange event fires when I switch between "Accounting", "Billing" or "Billing Sheets" - even though the variable returns "Billing Sheets" in all 3 cases.

    4. You can't seen to change the font color. The attached image is set to blue, yet it displays black.

    Any insights appreciated.

Well, I'm not sure a drill is really needed. I had hoped someone had run into these issues previously and found a work around. But here is a working sample. I put a ui_msg_Box in the tree's OnChange to demonstrate that it fires when you "change" tree nodes, but the variable value remains the same. Note that the font is set to blue yet displays black.

        HI Peter,

I remember reading a thread quite some time ago relating to this--that the only choice when selecting any part of a tree results in the "end" of the tree being the value no matter what was tried....and also seem to remember that it was either going to be fixed or was fixed.

I will attempt at finding this older thread.

LATER: Found one thread so far--An xdialog tree will work I guess whereas, at least in February of this year, a tree will not function as wanted on a form.

          Thanks, Mike.

It probably has not been fixed. I'm using 1965-3156

            Peter,
Do you think this to be a bug or simply a lack of a feature?? I'm prone to call it the former as the functionality of a form tree with this type of limitation just does not justify even using it in my opinion.

I agree. It's a "bug" - or a poorly implemented "feature". It's like they designed the tree to be used only for displaying records or values. I guess half-baked comes to mind.

                Behaving as expected.

No bugs. (with the exception of the font part and also, though not mentioned, the background which are and have been and probably will continue to be a bug or shall we say, a development challange not worth the time for alpha).

To figure out how to get it to work properly, a small dose of "introspection" is in order!

Want to think it over? Or want the easy answer?

                Remeber.. it's all about "introspection"..

                  1. To get the main topic or sub topic to return a value all you need do is assign a return value to it:

                  Accounting|Accounting
                  Accounting.Billing|Billing
                  Accounting.Billing.Billing Sheets|Billing Sheets
                  General|General
                  General.Clients|Clients

                  2. I tried changing your variable from layout to shared, but this really doesn't seem to make a difference in the Tree's behavior. It might make a difference in using the variable's value in a script though. If you can script an XDialog to expand, I'll bet you can here too. Setting the value for the variable in OnInit however didn't have any effect.

                  3. See #1

                  4. I got the background to change but nothing seems to effect the black on white that appears for the Tree's font. Which seems odd since the properties are there. Even when setting it in the object explorer for both the Tree and the variable object, nothing changes. It seems to be picking up some system default regardless - probably set for the choice list itself.

I think if you set a choice for each entry, your OnChange script should be doable. There is worse things than having to live with black on white!

                    Peter,
Robin got it--all that is needed is to assign values. Colors cannot be applied it seems to a tree control's font it appears.

Robin thank you! The "obvious" solution is just too easy! :)

Gabe, nice video. I probably would have gone around in circles w/o Robin's answer. Not a bug indeed.

                      Thanks everyone.

Re: Form MenuTree - events, xbasic, etc.

                        Peter,
To collapse the tree you can do this
                        Code:

                        topparent:Tree1.Choice.List[1].Value ="Accounting"
or probably any number of things really instead of reloading the tree. The code doesn't really do anything and have not yet found a way to expand the tree as so far have not been able to find many functions that will work with it such as we have with tabs --if there was a way to "set" the initial part of the tree when loading then a simple matter of setting the end of each part of the tree to expand them all was my thoughts....but no luck so far.

Or use xdialog as a tree there has these capabilities.

Thanks Mike. I already had the tree collapse worked out. The expand all or expand all branch would be nice, though.

I just found that "Alt + arrow right" will expand whichever part of the tree is currently in focus...may be able to use this.
