Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Focus on Find by key

    Migrating from version 4 to version 8. This is a silly problem, but it's repetitive, and there are thousands to do.

    The button in question plays

    PARENT.index_set("Catno")
    topparent.find()
    end

    or something similar. We have a list in Notepad.

    1. Copy an item like 12345 in Notepad.
    2. Click the button.
    3. (in v4) Paste
    or
    3. (in v8) Click in Search for: box
    4. (in v8) Paste

    In v8 the focus appears to remain on the button. Notepad is not required, the same happens if the focus was simply on a different form in A5.

    Try following the topparent.find() with

    sys_send_keys("{TAB}")
    There can be only one.

      More mysteries. I changed the form's tab order to make the button in question last, but sending tabs just moved the focus around the form. Experiments led to

      PARENT.index_set("Catno")
      topparent.find()
      end
      followed by a real, physical <Enter>

      Aha! Maybe

      PARENT.index_set("Catno")
      topparent.find()
      sys_send_keys("{ENTER}")
      end

      No joy. The Find by Key box flashes and disappears.

        Re: Focus on Find by key

        the current syntax requires you put something in the find

        like
        parentform.index_set("catno")
        parentform.find("1234")

        if the "1234" is coming from the clipboard there are clipboard tools you could use, but if you use it as you state, you MUST give it something to find.
        **********************
        sorry, I just noticed that a blank find() is supposed to bring up the find by key dialog, so disregard my message
        **********************
        using build 3163, I tried this and it worked perfectly:
        parentform.index_set("labnum")
        parentform.find()
        end

          Same version, slightly different syntax, seems to work the same. Did you have the focus on the form when you tested? The problem is when the focus is elsewhere - like Notepad or even a different form.

            I think you will need to get your data from notepad before you click on it.

              We do get the data before clicking the button. But now we have to click somewhere extra - either in A5 before clicking the button or in the Search for line after clicking the button.

              In version 4 the mouse went straight from the Notepad selection to the button and the cursor ended up in the Search for box by itself. A single click.

                Sandy, I created a text document with the following line with a carriage return:
                L08067133

                the search button has this code:
                parentform.index_set("labnum")
                parentform.find()
                end

                I highlighted the trext, used control-c
                clicked the button, clicked in the findbytext ui and did a control-v and then find - worked instantly

                  Exactly!!!!

                  In version 4 you would have

                  highlighted the trext, used control-c
                  clicked the button, done a control-v and then find
                  (or <Enter>)

                    Re: Focus on Find by key

                    just tried the Control-V without clicking in the ui box - but when I clicked the button it put focus to the box, and my control-v and enter/find worked perfectly.

                    1. had a text file open in notepad
                    2. highlighted and copied text
                    3. pushed button
                    4. did ^V
                    5. enter key
                    worked perfectly

                    do you have a wireless keyboard? try on a different computer, see if it works there.

                      Blast. When I do that #4 fails because the focus is in the form that holds the button. No focus on Find by Key, no pasting in Find by Key.

                      Keyboard is wired and splendid everywhere else - including version 4.

                        well, phooie!!

                        I am using xppro service pack 3

                        wired mouse and wired keyboard

                        try putting a button in alpha sports and see if it acts the same way to prove its not your form or app

                        also be sure your mouse is set to auto move pointer to default button (windows control panel)

                          Same OS and SP. Same in Alpha Sports. Windows mouse setting doesn't matter. :-(

                          I seriously think the difference is between versions 4 and 8. But I don't get why a manual <Enter> works but a scripted send keys doesn't. I also don't get why it matters where the focus was before the button was pushed.

                              Sandy,

                              You probably don't want to hear this but using the same steps as Martin in post 10 I get the same results. v8 1965-3156 xp pro sp2

                              Also when I just use ctrl+k the find by key dialog comes up with the cursor flashing in the text entry box.
