Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Zip Code Lookup

Hi, I'm new to this forum and using A5V8. Could someone tell me the code to have A5V8 look up the city and state and automatically fill in the fields when a 5 digit zip is typed into the zip code field. I have a seperate database for zip codes which has three fields ( zip code, city and state ). I accomplished this once before around 1998 with alpha4 which seemed easier.

    Thanks

    Dennis,

    Code:
    dim zipcode as C = "49546"

    ? usps_citystate_from_zip(zipcode)
    = city = "GRAND RAPIDS"
    state = "MI"

      Dennis,
Sorry I didn't get see until now that this was your first post. Welcome to Alpha!

The code I gave you I ran in the Interactive Window. Let us know if you need help with that and applying what I gave you. Since I just learned this today from MikeC, I'll share it with you.

      Code:
      dim zipcode as C = "49546"
      dim vz as p

      vz = usps_citystate_from_zip(zipcode)

      ? vz
      = city = "GRAND RAPIDS"
      state = "MI"

      ? vz.city
      = "GRAND RAPIDS"

      ? vz.state
      = "MI"

        Dennis,

If you have a table of zip codes, you can do your lookup in field rules with lookup and table. It can fill your city and state in just fine. I have been doing this for years. My zip table has extra fields I added because I need to track county taxes and some other stuff. It gets that done too.

Yes Please, Could you tell me where to put the code. I'm not doing any tax computation or any thing like that. I just rent out Ice Makers by the year and I want to track repairs on the machines for each customer. I have about 150 machines in three States so there are many zip codes, and It just makes data entry quicker to have alpha5 fill in the City and State.

            Re: Zip Code Lookup

In my application I have the table with the zipcodes added to database. Then I went to control panel and edit field rules of the table with the addresses or contacts in it. Scroll to the zip field, select tab for lookup. I chose table lookup, then told it where zipcode table was and link field of the field that has zipcodes in it. Then under source you would point to zip code city and fill city of your table. Same thing for state on next line. Your field names may be different.

Dave, thanks for that little tid bit of info. I have the zipcode dbf (from Alpha)
and never thought of adding additional fields for other information. I redone the Contact Manger that come with Alpha5 and incorportated the zipcode dbf into it.

thanks, a new project comming up.

                Re: Zip Code Lookup

                Jerry,

                Glad it helped.

I added a sales tax field(for states), county tax field and a max tax amount for those counties. I expect to add some city/municpalities tax fields later.

Also, I make sure the user can add a zip code as they are adding morezip codes as we go. They are also changing the taxes every so often.

                  Thanks to everyone,

If I get some time this weekend, I'll try a few of these methods and see which works best for my application.

                    Hello,
My Name Is Gandhi, I am new to this forum too.
Is it not possible to define the field rule in the main table to lookup the related table and define the fill in fields as it shows on the definition form. I am under the impression that you don't have to write a code for that. The limitation is that it only has the ability to display what you have in your related lookup database. If not in the list you can add as you go on.
Besides I have a silly question: Why do we need to have city and state in the main table? Why not have only zip code then create a set to report city and state when needed? The relationship between zip code and city, state will not change from the time we capture the data to the time we report unlike price of an object for example. Is that not true or is it important to have city and state in the main table.
                    thanks for reading

                      Re: Zip Code Lookup

In normalization theory, as I understand it, you could do that. But where you have difficulty is that you can end up with a huge set. And it is recommended to keep sets as small and simple as possible. Like you have a set containing 4 tables, and each table has 3 lookups, if you see what I mean.

So you have to balance normalization with practicality.

                        Govindan,

                        Another problem that may occur.

The zip code 34434 = dunnellon, FL when pulled from a zip code database by the postal service. It is actually Citrus Springs, FL. If you pull it on the fly always, it could be wrong. Some user intervention needs to be there. Some zip codes also include 2 townships. that can be another problem.

I think the data for the city should be kept in a table. Yo may have a great idea there for the state though.

Using a set is not what i would want, but a lookup() function.

                        .

                          Thanks for the info.
Also I noticed during web development it is better to keep city and state information in the same table to display in the same grid.
                          Thanks again for clarifying.
