Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Logged In Users

I've searched the functions and the web site and can not find a way to see which users are logged into the database.

I would like to "alert" a user that people are still logged in before backing up the database.

The only thing I can see which would help is

    A5_REGISTRATION_LICENSE_INUSE()

Won't tell you who but at least how many.

        Omar,

If you need more, try this?

I did not do this yet and really don't have that much use for it, but there have been numerous questions on how to know when someone has the database open. I for one am remiss in not thinking of this before. If it is something others can use, I will get it in motion so others may see how and most of the forum can do it on their own anyhow.

Why not make your own table, called, say "cusers". Include it in the database with these fields.

        nowdate d
        nowtime t
        nowuser c 50
        nowcomp c 50
        nowdone L

when a runtime (or other) opens the app, the autoexec gets the username and computer name and puts it in the cusers.dbf. Ondatabase close, it takes that record out by marking the nowdone a .f. and deleteing all that are marked as such. Others here may have even better ideas on how to use this/

This seems real simple to me and the developer or maintenance program can check for logged in users as needed.

A simple browse would tell you how many and who is logged in.

          Re: Logged In Users

Very good suggestion; I'm actually doing something similar to log who accessed the system but didn't think about an update to when they logged out!

Thanks for the tip, It solves the problem!

I create a guid for a "session" and update a users table. I will now set a logical flag based upon the session when they log in/out

Just a word of caution. All of the methods discussed rely on the application closing normally. Anything that crashes a machine or causes Alpha to not close normally will likely leave the user "logged in".

when did we ever get a crash???

                Good question.

I would think a quick check of the muf file for number of users could give a method to handle this. Or the next time the same user logged in??

                  FWIW

Here is a application that creates a security log whenever a user logs in.

It does not use the built in Alpha user log on (or windows log on) - you add users, passwords and access levels from within the app.

The user name for the test app is "admin" (not case sensitive) and the password is "alpha" again not case sensitive.

After selecting the okay button you will go to a test main screen which lets you "change to another user" , "view or print the security log" and "Enter new users and passwords (along with access level).

As Stan has already pointed out, if there is a crash or whatever that terminates the application other than user exiting from the program, the user will still show as logged on in the security log when the program is restarted.

This might give you some ideas.

                  Again FWIW

                    Tom,

I use almost the same scenario as you do and have done so fer a few years now. My log files is updated for many of the other things done in the app also.

If you look in the database part of the forum, you would see a copy of my user form showing almost what you just described. The show all users is only accesible by an admin.

I'll go ahead and post it here too:

                      Dave

The little app I posted is just rudimentary - no frills. The version I use in my application at work is a little more than that - Not as robust as your application - also, only the admin has access to the security log as well as password changes, entering new users and providing an access level (of which we only have 5 access levels from full access to screen with just two buttons - the one they need to work with and a close button - it's the same form with scripts to manipulate position of the buttons and which buttons show for each access level).

Thanks for the look at your form - I always appreciate and admire other peoples ideas and work.

                        Tom,

I sell this app and had to come up with a way that lot maintenance guys who make stickers(price tags) and add inventory did not have rights to go where a manager could. Also, a manager has rights to see all sales peoples records, but a salesperson can only see his own records. The CSI department needs to see all, but never change anything. One person is generally assigned as admin and can see what I showed you. The avarage user can go in and change his password and a few other things, but cannot see or change his own permissions.

It was necessary. There is only one user that can get to the control panel. That is me. There is no way the average user can get there. An Alpha Programmer might figure out a way, but not too sure about that. Would love to have someone test that one though with runtime.

Either way, I hope Omar got some help he needed.
                        .
