Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Missing Controlpanel Toolbar

I put a copy of my app on the server and made a shadow - the shadow is working fine. This morning I wanted to access the server copy to fix a form and it opened with my custom form toolbar showing and no control panel at all. Thinking there is a problem in the default form that opens, I did the contol+shift to get just the program and still only see the form toolbar and no control panel. I even tried going to Explorer to open the program without a shorcut - same problem; I can't get the program to even load the opening splash.

Any ideas where to begin to fix this? I tried reinstalling - didn't help. I opened the app in v10 and it works fine...

Maybe the control panel is off screen? Was there a dual monitor setup at one time?
    There can be only one.

No, it seems that the form to which the toolbar is attached that hides the controlpanel is loading but not displaying. Which is why I hoped that opening the program without a database (and no autoexec) would reveal something different. But this is happening regardless. Something in the program itself has become corrupt (missing or unregistered dll?) because the app does work fine in v10.

Also my at home copy of v8 still works ok.

I went into the Registry after uninstalling v8 and deleted the folder & subfolders under the v8 Software key. Then did a clean install from disk after rebooting and all is well once again. However I have lost all my preferences. Is there a particular file I can copy from home to get my settings back?

Is this part of the answer?

          Settings

Clicking View > Settings displays the Settings dialog box. This dialog box allows you to set many preferences that affect the way that Alpha Five operates. A_Viewsettings.Dbf, which you may want to distribute with an application, contains a list of the definitions for the panes on the dialog.

            Hi Sandy,
It would be the answer if any such file actually exists somewhere! Do you have a file like that? I looked in Documents and Settings as well my A5 folders and found nada.

That's why I answered your question with a question. No, I don't have that file, nor does any obvious file seem to change when settings are changed. But the quote is taken from version 8's help, so maybe it would tickle someone's memory.

A_viewsettings.dbf was discontinued with V7 and later.
