Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5v8 Runtime error after installing for the first time

On trying to run Alpha5.exe runtime version 1980-3163 after installing my application for the first time on a Vista PC, I get the following error:

    Code:
'Startup_100_Register_Controls'. Could not open OLE object <string of Hex characters>
I have created my application on a Vista PC using latest version of A5v8 Developer 1980-3163 and used Installmaker to create an installation file consisting of my application and the A5v8 runtime in separate folders under C:\Program files\. There were no problems doing this and installmaker completed without error.

I have used the same procedure successfully before on other PCs without experiencing any such problem.

Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this problem? Many thanks.

no surprise there really Brett! Seeing as how Vista came out after a5v8. But you can try to manually register (or use a bat file) the controls...there are several threads on this I remember reading. I will see about locating what is needed from my help file.

Here is one snippet I found (have 5 or so). They are run one at a time from the Run window in Windows.

    regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx
    regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx
    regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx
    regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx
    regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\a5contexteval.dll
    regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\a5controls.dll

In versions 6, 7, and 8 the specific file names will most times be different - just look in your A5 folder for the exact name of the control.

It may even be a permissions problem---must be admin to install Alpha initially....and if not then some things just won't install correctly (such as the controls).

Your application files should not be under program files. They should be in a folder in the root of a disk drive as: c:\myfolder\my app

It has been going this way with windows versions stronger and stronger since about windows 2000.

Thanks, David. A very good point which I will keep in mind for the future when I install to foreign PCs. However in this case the problem is with A5v8 runtime, not my application. The error message as described occurs when I try and run Alpha5.exe in the runtime folder, that is to say it occurs before I open and run my application.

          Hi Brett,

Mike did a good job of that for you. What he said should work. I just happened to notice the reference to where your app was and hoped I could help out a little.

          Have a good day

Yes, agree, good job. Many thanks.

The problem I have is that the PC on which the problem occurs is at a remote location. I really need a test PC to try things out on first. Then I will feel confident that I can travel to the site and fix the problem in a few minutes. I currently have no other PC available to me to test on which has the same problem. Taking a production PC off a busy person for an indefinite time to try something out which may or may not work is not a good way to do business for me. So I am trying to think of a better way to do it.
