Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Can't Save New Table

Sorry about the previous topic listing I accidently hit the send message button without finishing.

I have a backup copy of my database on a CD . My Problem is that I noticed when I tryed to reload my database from the backup CD one of my important data tables was missing (set_area_table.dbf)and my main menu table was missing (

A rundown of the tables and sets that make up my database are as follows:

    set_area_table.dbf (dimmed)
    invoice_menu.dbf (dimmed)

invoice.set(consist of all above tables except invoice_menu)
    set_area.set(contains all tables except invoice_menu)

My problem is that I want to be able to recreate my set_area_table.dbf file so as all my forms , layouts , browses that are associated with this table can be loaded and I can edit (so everything is back to normal).

All my forms ,layouts etc. are displayed but my set_area_table is dimmed. I tryed to find the file in the directory indicated but it was'nt there.

I need to know if I can make a new set_area_table by filling out a structure chart to the best of my knowledge (field names, field type etc) so as I can open forms ,layouts associated with this table to the point that I can at least get error messages that I can fix after looking at the trace menu or something. I see all my forms , layouts etc in the control panel but I can't load any of them until i create my set_area_table again because of many of my forms and layouts including my 2 sets needing it. Also, what is the best way to edit this database without interuppting all the working parts? Should I work from the CD, from the hardisk, make a copy of the database etc?

One more thing, when I worked from the CD and created a new set_area_table structure the program would'nt let me save the file because i received an error msg box that

d:National Media ConceptsCustomer DatabaseAlpha FiveTemplatesDATABASESinvoiceset_area_table.DBF you do not have permission to open this file.

See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission.

Why can't I save my new table i made?

    Please Help Me

    RE: Can't Save New Table

I don't know if this is any help:
When you copy tables from a CD, they wind up on your hard drive as read only. Alpha can't access a read only file. You might look there for the problem. Also, if you are backing up from within Alpha, you can't back up the table your backup script is attached to since it will be an open table. Also, suggest you search this forum and the V4 forum for similar threads. There may be a clue thre.
