Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Jerry,

    1) scripts saved to the Code Page of the control panel can be deleted by right clicking on them. There's a delete option on the drop down.

    2) Alpha Five automatically creates indexes needed by your set linkage definitions and field rules. These cannot be permanently deleted until you change or delete the field rule or set which prompted Alpha to create them in the first place.

    Tom:

I think I found the problem. I cleared out my index/query list as best as I could. Then made sure all forms were on the same "page"/index. Now it seems to be okay...haven't had another recurrence of freezing up or "heap lock failure" yet.

This Alpha5v5 novice truely appreciates your help!

    Two questions:

    1. How do I delete my scripts files? I want to rewrite them correctly; but all the old ones are still showing.

    2. How do I correctly delete the old index/query? There are some that have a greyed-out delete box...therefore, not available for deletion in the Primary Index/Query.

Ctrl-enter is for saving the current record and beginning to enter a new record.

    Jerry,

If you want to zip the entire database (not just the tables), I'll be glad to take a look at it privately. You'll need to tell me which form, table, or set is misbehaving.

Ctrl-Enter ???? Never heard of it.

Do you mean to say Ctrl-E ????

    Tom:

    THANKS VERY MUCH!!!!!!!

You were RIGHT: the field structure of one of my reports and my form were at variance. I corrected all to correspond in structure, rules and design properties.

HOWEVER, while it work great for a short while, I got an error message that says "heap lock failure". Now I am back where I started with the freezing up problem.

If I edit a record, when I push F9 or ctrl-enter, I again get the hourglass wait.

By the way, my build is 1506--the latest.

    Jerry,

You should also download and install the latest patch updates for your version of alpha Five, too.

    What build are you running?

    Jerry,

A useful start to unscrambling this kind of thing is to determine if the same behavior occurs using the 'default form' for the table.

The default form is available on the right click menu of each table icon in the control panel. Open the default form for the table. Edit or enter a few records. If it behaves the same (miserably slowly) then that's a good indicator there's something amiss in the table's field rules, structure, or indexes. If you get quick performance using the default form, that's a good sign the trouble lies in your custom data entry form.

    Thank you for your response.
    I am using A5V5.
It still delays entering the correction/edits when I use F9, ctrl-S, or ctrl-enter.
The delay is about 2-4 minutes.

I live in Southern California where there is very hot weather. I started this morning when it was cool; so it's not the computer. All my other programs work speedily--including my Alpha Four v6.

    any other suggestion??

    Thanks for your time!!!

    Jerry,

    In Alpha Five V5,

F3 toggles editing for a modal data entry form. It doesn't save pending edits.

F9 s/b used to commit a change or enter transaction.

    Jerry,

This forum is for questions/issues having to do with upgrading from Alpha 45 to Alpha 5. You do not indicate if you are talking about Alpha 4 or 5, not do you indicate which version of the product you are referencing. This makes answering your question fairly close to impossible.

Having said that, in Alpha 4, (excluding a custom menu bar), if you tap 'C' to change a record, [F10] is the Save key - not {F3]. In Alpha 5, using the Alphasports demo application, [F9] is the save key.

You might want to post your question (with the above information included) to the appropriate forum.

    Editing Records Freezes Up

I would appreciate any suggestions why when I enter a record to edit it, make changes, and hit F3 to save the info, I get a long and unchanging hourglass icon. I have to ctrl-alt-del the Aplha Fivev5 program. When I reopen the program, the information IS saved. But when I change another record, the same thing happens avery time

Note that I am new to Alpha Five. I have been using Alpha Four for 10 years.
Working...
