Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    OPERATING SYSTEM UPGRADE

I currently use Windows98SE as my operating system. I use A4V6.02 on a server that feeds 5 workstations. The server and workstations are connected simply through Windows peer-to-peer networking.

Will I have any data problems if I upgrade my operating system to either Windows 2000 or XP? Is there anything special I would need to do to the data for it and all my custom screens to work?

If either upgrade would work, which is the better of the two - not just for my current A4V6 but my contemplated move to A5?

    RE: OPERATING SYSTEM UPGRADE

Running v6 or below on Windows 2000 or XP is very likely to corrupt your data. v7 was released specifically to address this problem and make Alpha Four safe on newer operating systems.

      RE: OPERATING SYSTEM UPGRADE

Lenny - thanks for your guidance. What you said made me recall that I had purchased A4V8.0 in December of 2003, stuck it in my filing cabinet, and forgot about it. Are you indicating that I should do the following, in order:
      1) purchase and install either Windows2000 or "XP": and then
      2) Install A4V8.0.

Do I have to delete A4V6 from my system or can I install A4V8 over A4V6?

Will all my special screens and scripts remain intact and functioning?

I apologize for asking you to be my technical advisor, but I don't know where else to get this information and if I screw up my data I'm out of business.

I would appreciate if you can help answer the above questions - or possibly tell me who to contact.

        RE: OPERATING SYSTEM UPGRADE

You should have a complete backup of your application in a safe location before you start. Ideally, you'd keep your old system in place and operating while you set up version 8 on a new machine and test it with a COPY of your application to make sure it all works before switching over for production use.

You'll do better if you reformat your hard drive and do a clean install of XP. That way XP won't inherit any "issues" from the Win98 install.

I haven't made the move from version 6 to version 8, but most of what I've seen on this forum indicates it's reasonably painless and straightforward.

If you run A4V6 on win xp, does it make a difference in using FAT32 or NTFS on whether data might be corrupted?

            Re: Operating System Upgrade

The corruption has nothing to do with the file system. It apparently has something to do with the way NT/2000/XP accesses memory. You can run A4V6 under any of these versions of windows as long as you do not do any of the following:

            reconfigure a database
run global update on large amount of records
copy to or append data from other databases

I had to live with this for a while before I upgraded to A4V7. What I found that work best for me was to run A4V6 from 2000/XP while accessing data from Netware servers. Netware file and print services are superior to Windows file and print services in a Alpha4 multiuser environment.
