Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4v6 exporting from a set

    Hello all,

I'm currently using Alpha 4v6 for a project and have come across an issue. I'm attempting to export data from one of my sets to an character delimited text file. It seems that when exporting, the records get duplicated a number of times for every child record the parent has. Is there any way to prevent this so I can have each record's information appear on a single line on the text file?

I know you can use the scanning() command for reports to prevent this, but I'm lost on how to do this for file exports.

    Please help

Sounds like normal behavior. You could simply open the parent table and do your export from the table rather than from the set and that should solve the problem.

I'm doing that in the meantime, but I was hoping there was a way to get the parent and child fields on a single record. I have a work-around via Excel, but that requires a fair amount of manual work.

I apparently didn't understand what you are trying to do. I still don't.

If you have a record in your parent table that is linked to five child records, and you export from that set, you should get five exported records with the fields from the parent repeated in each exported record but with the unique fields from each child.

What result are you trying to achieve? Do you want fields from the parent record with fields from only the first child? Or from only the last child? Or from only a certain child depending on conditions?

(Thanks for your responses, by the way!)

I have a set with three databases

#1: Customer - Customer Information (parent of the set)
#2: Homes - House Information (one to many relationship with parent, but only one child exists per parent at this time)
#3: Callstat - Call Statuses (one to many relationship with parent)

When I export data from the set and include fields only from the Customer and Homes databases, I still have a number of records exported equal to the number of records in the Callstat database. I'd like to avoid having those repeat records on the export file.

Create a new set using only customer and homes and export from there.

Try printing to a file first. When setting up your report to print, put the parent record in the Titles section & the child record in the Detail section. WE use these method to print invoices where some parent records do not have a child record and some parent records have several child records.

Also, version 4 did not do this. If you have V4, use it to open your set.

                  Karen,

Are you EXPORTING or PRINTING a Report.

It may be easier to use the PRINT REPORT to achieve what you want.

Get rid of all sections except the DETAIL section. Print to a File and use the PRINTER Default for your Printer. Whether you use the field names, or new field names, or none, will depend on what you want in your target file.

With this you can select the Character for field seperation that you want.

                  Steve
