Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

To Upgrade Or Not To Upgrade?

Abe Lincoln and I must be the only ones left still using A4v1.1b!! I installed it back in '92 when I needed a database that could do heavy lifting. My needs have since greatly lessened, so I now call upon A4 for not much more than personal Christmas card labels and an address source.

Through the years, A4 has performed like gangbusters for me. But I started to see the first hints of A4 record corruption when I upgraded to XP SP2 a few weeks ago. (Other posts in this forum also point to XP as a troublemaker for early versions of A4.)

So here's my dilemma: it appears my v1.1b might be ready for the Smithsonian. I hate to abandon an old friend, but -- given my curtailed needs -- do I lay out a C-Note for an A4 upgrade, or do I look for a more prudent solution?

If I switch to a lower-cost or no-cost database, is there a no-pain way to transfer A4 data, or does it all have to be re-entered?

    Thanks much for the guidance.

RE: To Upgrade Or Not To Upgrade?

    Leo,

Have you tried getting into the Guiness World Book? A4V1 - wow!!

The problem(s) you are experiencing between A4 and Windows XP will only get worse as newer and newer versions of Windows are released. From my point of view, you have a few choices: stay with what you have and suffer with the problems; upgrade to A4V8 (supposed to eliminate (or reduce) the problems between Alpha and Windows; upgrading to Alpha 5 (latest flavor is V6). However, upgrading will present you with a whole new set of challenges.

You will probably have some changes to address if you go to A4V8, you will have a big hill to climb if you elect the A5 route (many of us have climbed that hill). You have to look at the cost of the various options, stability of what you presently have vis a vis Win XP, future compatibility if you elect the Alpha 5 route.

No one can tell you what is best for you, but I would suggest that the Alpha 5 route is the way to go in the long run. It is stable, runs well with Win XP and is the future of the company.

Good luck on whichever way you go,

    Dave
