Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DESPERATE! A4 and HP 5L

I have been using Alpha 4 V.1 forever as my business database. The problem is my HP laserJet 5L printer just died and my only other printer is a Canon S750 with USB. A4 doesn't know from USB's.

If I go out and buy a new HP laser with a parallel connection, will A4 automatically recognize it? I LOVE A4, but it doesn't know any printers newer than ten years old and I can't start converting to a Windoes-based Db program. Ok, I could, but I don't want to. I like A4.

    Thanks to anyone seeing this.

    Mark;
If you buy a new HP Laser, A4 will work great. Just be sure you can hook it up via the parallel port, and use an HP II, HP III, HP IV, or HP V driver with your forms and reports.

    Good luck,
    Duncan

Thanks Duncan. I ended up buying a refurbished 5L. I have 3 unopened toners here. I really hated the idea of tossing them, not to mention not being in love with spending $400.00 for a new printer. Thanks again.

Before you spend any money on a new printer, upgrade to V8. If my memory serves me correctly, it will handle Windows based printers AND USB connections. Give Alpha Software a call, just to make sure - 1-800-451-1018.

Actually, I believe even with v8, A4 will not "play" with USB.

            Mark,

When you use up those tone cartriges, go out and buy an HP 1200 Laser. You just plug it in and go. You won't have to change anything.

And it prints about 5 times faster than the 5L.

              Hey Ron,
Thanks. I will. I got a refurb 5L for $199.99. The two toners I have left should last me about a year. I just didn't want to drop $400 or $500 on a new printer + have to buy toner when I've got 2 brand new toners here.

The HP 1200 has both Parallel and USB inputs,
it loves Alpha 4 and prints like crazy. Very Fast!!!!!!!!!! Especially compared to the HP 5L. And it has far better paper handling.

If you use a print server you can use USB. Also we use both HP and Brother printers with A4v6 with no problems.Just print to the Brother with the HPIV driver.
