Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What's after 6.0.11

I have been running A4V6 (6.0.11) for a long time. It has bugs here and there, but I am productive with it.

What are the benefits of later versions (what was fixed?)
    Is upgrading troublesome?

    Thanks,

    Dan

    RE: What's after 6.0.11

I believe the biggest change was to allow printing through a Windows printer. An increasing number of new printers are incapable of printing from DOS or connect only through USB ports and Alpha Four versions prior to version 7 could print to them.

The biggest problem some have encountered in upgrading is that if you upgrade and utlize one of these newer Windows only printers, you cannot run typeset (is that the correct term?) quality reports on that printer.

Besides using Windows drivers, the other advantages are that the next version is compatible with WIN XP/2000 and you can email/fax anything that's printable.

The Typeset feature works the same way as in A4V6.

Is that true of V7 also, or are you thinking only of V8?

I'd like to upgrade, but the computer I'm running A4 on still runs Win 3.1. Apparently I can't upgrade Windows, even to 98 or 2000, without upgrading A4.

          Is all of this correct?

            Gary;
Both Win 95 and Win 98 run all versions of A4.

                RE: What's after 6.0.11

OK, I've got a new problem. Still running A4 V6.0.11, but I've upgraded from Win 3.1 to Win 98.

Prior to upgrading, in a date field I could type the month and date, hit enter or F10, and it would fill in the current year. Now, it fills in 1030 as the year.

In Windows, Control Panel, Date / Time is set correctly for 2003.

The date is also correct in DOS.

Can anybody help me get this fixed?

                Thanks! Gary

                  Gary;
This is an A4 Y2K problem. It has been sometime since I've dealt with it, so I will revisit it and let you know.

OK, maybe so, but just a couple months ago I had it completing "2003", and last year it would complete "2002". I don't know now how I got it to do that!

                    Thanks for helping.

Use the "search" function on this forum and yenter "Y2K". Should answer your problem.

                        Hi,
Go to main menu, other, configuration, default settings and the 2 digit date is an option.

Steve, thanks, but that's not on my options - configuration menu. The only choices regarding date are Date Separator and Date Formats American / European.

If I'm missing something, please walk me through it.

                          Thanks. Gary

                            Gary,

I wonder if it is V6.2 only. It is certainly on my 6.2 option. I am rushing out now but I think V6.2 is downloadable.

I have used 6.2 now for several years and it appears reasonable.

Yes, that choice is only available on v 6.2 forward.
