Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I need advice on networking 2 pc's using A4V6

I have 2 windows 98se pc's at work that are networked together using a crossover cable. I want to network A4V6 between the two. I have 2 single user copies of A4V6. I already had A4V6 running on the first pc in exclusive mode. I reinstalled A4V6 on the first pc and selected multi-user. After the install I confirmed through Other->Configuration that file sharing was enabled and it showed lisenced users=1. I installed A4V6 onto the second pc and also selected multi-user but after installation completed file sharing was Exclusive. I want users on the second pc to be able to share the databases stored on the first pc. What am I doing wrong? Can someone please give me some advice/instruction on how to accomplish this correctly?

    Thanks
    Kerry

Unless someone has been able to get this to work I think you have a problem. I remember the day in Nov. 1998 when I was setting up a clients new computer on the network and was attempting to get share access to work over the LAN. Never happened. Reason: from Win'95 "B" forward, Microsoft quit supporting the use of SHARE.EXE on the O/S which is required by A4V6. I afraid you will never get this to work on the LAN unless you or someone else can figure out a way to get A4V6 to recognize that SHARE is loaded.

Thanks for responding but after working on it here and there over the last several days and with the help of quite a few older posts I searched out of A4's message forum, I finally figured it out. I've got both pc's sharing the one application and database files correctly. When I press F3 on either pc it still says licensed user=1 but it works fine so I'm not fretting over it. My only problem now is I can't seem to print typeset reports from the 2nd pc. I have a printer hooked to the first pc and set to be shared. I get "Couldn't load printer definition" error message along with "Unable to initialize typeset mode". I only worked on the printer for a short time and plan to resume troubleshooting after Christmas. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about what to do I'd appreciate it. Unfortunately, there is very little regarding this problem in the A4 forum.

      Merry Christmas

Can both PC's access the same database at the same time?

I remember when I wanted to add another user to my little network here at work. I had to do something called "Increase user count". As I recall, this was done using the installation disks for the 2nd or 3rd copy on the machine that the first copy resided. That was about 2 years ago, so my recollection might be wrong.

Anyway, glad you got it to work.

Thanks for responding Mike. Both pc's can access the same DB and even the same file at the same time. Everything works as it should. I spoke too hastily when I said there wasn't very much info in the older A4 forum posts regarding my printer problem. After some serious searching I found a post about needing to capture the correct printer port on the second pc. Once I did that, everything worked fine.
