Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    error trapping

I am new to Alpha 4 and learning. I have a very simple (I hope) problem with trapping an error.

for instance.. in my script I have the recorded the keystrokes

    I (index)
    E (erase)
    A (the last index created)

if the index does not exist, I want the next lines of the script to continue on as if nothing happened.

What can I add to this script to catch the error and continue?
    For example....

    {I} {Enter} {E} {Enter} (A} {Enter}

    Will,

    I haven't done much with A4 (V6) in a LONG time, but...

You are going to have an index - either the default record number, or one you create.

Take a look at the IF-THEN statement, or CASE SELECT statement. They are both 'standard' programming tools that are supported in just about every programming language. If you have any problem understanding how to use either of them, let me know.

      RE: error trapping

      Thanks Dave,
I know, I know ... I have a lot to learn about Alpha4.. .. all my past experience has been with Foxpro and I know how to handle error trapping there.

Hate to look like a dummy but

I tried to work already with the if-then statement with
      the simplest of scripts

      I (index)
      E (erase)
b (select the b index)(or simply pass the enter key)

the followint is not the syntax.. but shows what I am trying to accomplish.

      if(no index "b" exists,ignore and continue,else{delete the b index))

Everything I have tried failed miserably.
I cant find the appropiate statement that says if no b index exists, keep right on rolling to the next line of the script.

Havent tried the case statements with this problem.

        Will,

I'll crank up my A4V6 when I get home this evening and I'll send you the syntax. If not this evening, then tomorrow afternoon when I get done with classes for sure.

          Will,

Forget the Case statement, you situation doesn't require it.

I had something almost written using an IF statement, but I think we can do it even simplier. Just write a script (let's call it "REMOVEB') with these keystrokes IEBY, the 'Y' confirms the erasure of Index B. Save it and then write a second script with {PLAY "REMOVEB"} on the Keys/Commands line. This second script will play the original script.

Thanks for the reply Dave, however, your solution will not work if a b index doesnt even exist.

I dont know if I am explaining mys problem clearly.

I hope what Gary sent is more what I need. I wont be able to try it till Monday. Thanks Gary.
