Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Peer to peer network problem

I've set up a peer to peer network between my notebook computer and my desktop computer using my desktop computer as the server. Both computers are set up identically. I'm using Windows 98SE and TCP/IP with NetBios as the protocal. The network appears to be working fine.

I'm running Alpha 4v6 Runtime with an unlimited license on both machines. I have a shortcut on each machine that points to the shared folder containing the a4v6rt.net file and the shared folder containing the data files for the
    application.

I can log on with the notebook and everything runs fine. It's running in shared mode, the data files and the A4V6RT.NET file path's are correct and the licensed users is 9999.

My problem is that the desktop will only log on in exclusive mode, the network type is called Other and the licensed users is 0. The path is correct and the A4V6.NET path is correct.

I've tried going into the system defaults and setting the network for shared, but the settings don't take.

Can anyone help me with this?

    Thanks,

    Ron

RE: Peer to peer network problem

    Ron,
If I remember correctly from some years ago, I had a similar problem that was solved when I selected NetBeui as the protocol and checked the block under the advanced tab making it the default protocol.

Ron: Do you have the A4v6 Runtime manual?

It appears that the runtime program should be installed in ALL stations, peer to peer and each started from the runtime program directory on its local drive, pointing to the application data directory. Is that how you are set up, or are you trying to 'hook' a full version into the group?

Are you using the A4V6RT.BAT or the ALPHART.EXE? Have you tried the '/2' command line switch in the batch to force multi-user?

      Just some thoughts.

I tried NetBeui and it didn't make any difference.

          Ken,

I have a separate version of the runtime on each computer and I'm not trying to run a full version with the runtime.

I'm using the A4V6RT.bat to start each program. Everything is the same on both computers. The notebook works, the desktop doesn't.

I'm going to try the '/2' switch.

          Thanks

I tried the '/2' switch and it had no effect.

I tried using ALPHART.EXE and it made no difference.

I think I'll try running the programs with the data and shared files on the notebook and see what happens.

            Thanks

              Ron:

In one post you said '.....The path is correct and the A4V6.NET path is correct...? Don't we need a4v6rt.net? Or.... was that a typo. Maybe the 'server's' start bat isn't pointing to the proper net file.

Just a thought, but it has to be something dumb - I've been there -- done that - we all have.

RE: Peer to peer network problem

Been a while since I played with this but try copying the a4v6rt.net file to the directory where arv6rt resides. I believe we put it on each local machine and not on the server although I seem to remember that you could also put it in a shared directory on the server.
Do you have a share on the directory where a4v6rt resides. If not you need to put a share on it. To do this right click on network neighborhood (win 98) and in properties check microsoft file and print sharing. Then you'll be able to right click on the folder with a4v6rt.net and apply a share to it.

                Hope this helps

RE: Peer to peer network problem

I think I found the problem.

It appears that I have a hardware interrupt conflict between the network card and my IEE 1694 card. I didn't notice this before.

The network card cannot share an interrupt.

Once I resolve this problem, Alpha may then work properly.
