Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

cleaning up old entriesn in the welcome page-HOW?

Can any one tell me how to clean out old entries cluttering up the welcome box? There are dual entries, some of which are dead ends, and some no longer in use.

    Harold:

I've been watching your post for several days and I suspect what you're saying has to do with the A5 program rather than A4.

There is a 'Welcome' screen with db and paths listed in A5 and tho I have no idea how to alter these, I'll look into for the enlightenment of us both, and get back to you.

      I did it Harold:

Here's how [you're supposed to back up the registry before you mess around in there - I don't know how to do that].

Press the windows 'Start' button then 'Run'.Then type in REGEDIT as the command and click O.K. Be really careful in there, this is the registry and it literally RUNS the Windows operating system. Don't do any other deleting or editing.

click HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareAlpha Five 4.0Recent file list.

Put your pointer on the icons at the right you don't want to display and RIGHT CLICK. Pick delete from the drop list and left click it. These are numbered most recent on top, #1 etc. Just DON'T delete the ones you wish to see at the Welcome screen.

Thanks again, Always wanted to do that but didn't take the time to figure ou how until now.

      Ken

P.S. Harold, this is the A4V6 message board. This should have been posted on the A5V4 board.

      ALPHA on!

Thank you. I will try it, as I am familiar with regedit, and not afraid to use it-CAREFULLY. I am using ALPHA5 version4.5, and will upgrade as soon as I hear there is one.

            Hi Ken
I have XP and just for reference it has a built in Backup utility that is very easy to use. Included is a special checkbox for "system state", a snapshot of your current computer settings, etc. Backups the entire Windows program and everything associated with it. Really super handy. I am getting into the habit of backup periodically to CD.

Computer dies, reload the last backed up "system state" and your back in business.

There's my plug for XP. (Your welcome Bill.)

              From Regedit's help file:

To export all or part of the registry to a text file

              1. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

              2. In the Export Range area, click All to back up your entire registry, or click Selected Branch to back up only a particular branch of the registry tree.

              Tips

The .reg files created by exporting can be edited by any text editor.

Thank you. I do not have XP as I am a long time computer user and have a wealth of DOS files I would hate to loose. (16 years worth) As soon as the situation in XP is fixed, I will upgrade. I will try the back up proceedure in (8

A big DUH on me. Who'd ever think of looking in the registry's own menuing system for such a thing???

I am new to Alpha5, but an old hand at computers. So old that I have forgotten so much and have to ask my grandson for basic stuff. The old instruction books that we used to get, and so few used, had it all there. I am now gathering strength to tackle the Palm...
