Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    UDN? INA?

    Fellas,

This guy has a runtime only, thinks version 4 and several forms where the region's record numbers need to be increased. He's getting 'number excedes...' error when he attempts to enter in the region.

Of course with only runtime he can't edit the forms to increase the record numbers and I'm trying to remotely help. SUPPOSE.... I can open his forms with a full version; change the reqion's record number limits -- this updates the UDNs and the INAs.

If I do this; send him the updated UDN and INA files can we expect it to work on his end? Where should he put them?

He has sent me the original application disks produced by a Alpha programmer who's no longer with us. I'm unable to start the app, but can open and edit all of the forms.

What say? He seems like a nice guy who loves and has used the program for many years in his small business.

    Thanks in advance

    Ken

    RE: UDN? INA?

    Ken,

I believe you only have to update the INA.

    As a test:

You could make a sample form. Note the date/time stamps of all the files. Just change the region's record number and save the form. Then check the date/time stamp of the files. If the only changed file is the INA, your plan should work.

Send him a copy of both files.
Have him save the old INA someplace safe.
Load the new INA and have him give it a try.
I think at worst, all he would have to do is reload the old INA if the new one didn't work.

      RE: UDN? INA?

      Ken,

I just thought of a possible problem.

The form has to be attached to a database. I believe that if you open the form and the fields on the form aren't in the current database, Alpha will delete those fields from the form. You will not be able to stop this from happening.

        RE: UDN? INA?

        Thanks for the input Ron.

I've tried exactly, the test for date stamping that you've suggested. I HAVE the databases [empty,of course] as they came to him in the original install.

I don't have the runtime to test it with. It HAS worked on my test full version to full version. I've noticed that you can't update the reqion's record limits without updating the corresponding UDN. I just can't be sure what will happen at HIS end. I'm not sure that I can comunicate what he might have to do to protect his app during these tests. I.E. move or rename files to protect himself, etc. I was hoping for a confirmation that I could do these and simply have him copy the revision files into the directory.

Thanks again Ron, keep thinking, as I will, and maybe something else will come to mind.

          RE: UDN? INA?

          Hi Ken,

          First, the UDN file is:

User definition file. Contains most recently used form id, browse table id, colors selection, and other user-specific settings.

That's right out of the Alpha manual.

It's my understanding that this file is generated when the user exits Alpha.

          Second:

Because Alpha 4 is DOS, have him make a complete copy of the folder where all the data files reside. He should be able to add the INA and everthing should work. If it doesn't, empty the folder and restore with the copy.

It should not make any difference if he only has the runtime unless possibly it's a different version of Alpha 4 than you have. Say, runtime Alpha 4v4 verse full version, Alpha 4v6.

The INA file is a form definition file. The IN is for form and the A means it's form A.

I have Alpha 4v6 runtime and this form change would not effect how the form funtions between full version and runtime. My only concern is verifing that making this change only affects the form and nothing else. I don't even care about the UDN. I'm pretty sure that you could delete all the UDN files, run the program and they'd all be back.

            Ron:

I tend to agree and appreciate all of your concerns and help.

I think, with windows explorer and live phone contact with this guy, that I can talk him thru what we need to do.

Thanks again --- Funny you and I were doing the same things with the manual and all. Making similar conclusions.

Strange........ Whadaya bet Perlow could do it all in a second.
