Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error message, number of child records exceeds cap

    Hi,

I have a invoicing program called Quick Ticket developed with Alpha 4 v.4. It came with instructions for the invoicing program but not for Alpha 4. The company is no longer in business.
When looking up some records, I get an error message
"Number of child records exceeds the regions capacity. Edit the form and increase max. number of records in the region parameters screen. I would appreciate any help. Thanks. John Evans.

    John:

With the involved set loaded on the desktop before pressing 'View', get to Alpha's Main menu and key 'L'ayout 'F'orms 'C'reate/edit, and select the problem form. It will open in edit form without the 'region records excede.... bla....' message.

Now [TAB] highlight the region; press F6; and select 'Region Parameters'. There, scroll the cursor down to 'maximum number of records....' and raise that number. I've had in excess of 1500 here with no appreciable slow down in performance.

Save all of this with however many [F10]'s it takes and you'll be in business!

Write back if you're successful or need more help.

    Ken

RE: Error message, number of child records exceeds

      Ken,

Thanks for replying. I was going to load it on another computer before proceding but it wouldn't install. It said I need more memory, but there is plenty. Anyway, I backed everything up and I was going to try it but I don't know where Alpha's main menu is. Is it possible the company I purchased the program from eliminated some of the functions? My main menu only gives me options for invoicing program. If I minimize the program and try to load the program a second time, it has a menu option that tells me to select a set, but after doing that I don't seem to have the selectios you described. Any ideas? Thanks, John.

It's possible that your running your Alpha program with the runtime version of Alpha 4. If that's the case, you will need a full version of Alpha 4 to make this change.

I'm not sure how confidential the information is, but you could e-mail the files to someone that has Alpha 4, they could make the change, and then e-mail them back to you.

The change required is very simple.

Using Windows Explorer, find the main program file in the folder where the Alpha program resides. The runtime is named different than the normal program executatable. I do not believe there is any other way to tell wether you have the runtime or not.

In Alpha 4v6, the runtime is ALPHART.EXE and the normal is ALPHA.EXE.

It is the run-time version. When it boots up it says Runtime version 1.97.
My customers expect professional confidentially so I better not e-mail the files. I,ll maybe try to find the program somewhere.
Does anyone know if I would have to have Alpha 4 version 4 or will a newer version work? Does the full version have any problems loading as I had before? Also, is run-time something optional that I will need? Thanks for your help. John.

I'm not sure if Alpha 4v4 is 100% compatable with Alpha 4v7. Somebody on this board should know. You may have to submit another post. If it is, you will need to:

            1. purchase Alpha 4v7 and install it on a computer
            2. copy your clients files onto that computer
            3. make the neccesary change
            4. copy the modified files back to your clients machine

Thanks for responding again. I might not persue the problem any further. I've learned to work around it and I caught the problem after it had only effected a very few files. I thought it was going to be a simple change I could make if I knew how but it's getting to be a lot of trouble. At least I know what I have to do. Thanks Ken and Ron for your help and concern. Ken, I tried to e-mail you but it comes back as undeliverable.

                John:

I've looked into it again and I think the 'Runtime ver 1.97' you're seeing at boot up is the version of DOS/4GW that alpha uses as a disk accelerator. I don't now believe that you have a runtime Alpha.

Please when it launches at the first form which takes data, press F3 and look to the right lower and see the 'Version' number.

To get to the main menu from anywhere, hold ALT and press F10 - you'll either see the Alpha Main menu or be asked for a password.

My e-mail Address is [email protected] P L E A S E contact me i I really tink we can get this going now.
