Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Desktop not recongized

We are working on Alpha4v4 upgrading it to Alpha4v6.
Soon as we have done the upgrade by installing
Alpha4v6 and transfer the database/set files from
Alpha4v4, Alpha4v6 is unable to find location of
desktop and database that was once link to application
    menu.

I have made share mode, network to NETBIOS, and
coverted the dtn file for call out for right directory
but still unable to open any desktop nor database file.

    Anybody know how to?

    Louis:

No one is answering so I thought I would. Generally for the desktop to be usable, the *.dtn has to be in the application path files. A4strpdt.exe needs to be run against these files to remove strict complete paths.

Without seeing your files or application structure one can only guess why they once worked and now do not.

Is the app so large that the app directory can't be zipped either for this board or to my personal email address? If you can zip it to me [or the board] I'll try to figure it out for you.

      RE: Desktop not recongized

      Hello Ken,
      Thank you for your information.
I have restructure the *.dtn files, however it is still
      not recognized.
Do you know what does A4strpdt.exe do to *.dtn
      files?

I believe the datapath is not recognized by new version
alpha4v6, but I don't know how to change the directories that are written on the *.dtn files.

Let me know if you have any other suggestion.

      Thanks
      Louis

        RE: Desktop not recongized

        Lou:

If the desktop files are stored in the Program directory they may need to be 'stripped' with a4strpdt.exe. You see they're originally stored with full paths, i.e. c:/alpha4v6/data/blabla.dbf. What the stripper does is remove references to the paths. When they're removed, Alpha looks for the dbf's in the program directory. I either case do below when you find them.

The DOS syntax is A4STRPDT[space]Desktop-name.dtn. The action will give the message 'paths removed'. Try that first.

Now if you can, edit the Application start up macro and see if the statement {SET SYS_APP_DESKTOP,"Y"} exists. If so, then move the DTN files into the application directory/folder. If not MAKE the statement and move those *.dtn files into the subdirectory for the app.

          Re: Desktop not recongized

Is there a way to change the path the "Retrieve a Desktop" option is looking in? The Drive\Path it is looking in is set to the C: drive but the saved Desktops are on the H: drive.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

          Thank You,

          Brett

            Before going in too deep,,,

            what version of Alpha4?

Are you using an 'application' or just using Alpha4 straight out of the box?

If you are using version 6 or above do you have the manual in either hard copy or the .pdf file??

There are ways to do what you ask but the means are different depending on conditions.
